XPS8500 CD Playback

Hi.

Having set up my new XPS8500 three weeks ago I just inserted a CD to play and nothing happened, no programs opened and the music CD did not play. I must say I find the technical support pages of Dell very convaluted and have been unable to access technical support so if anyone could help I would really appreciate it.

I have Windows 7 installed.

Thank you.

    Hi CLARET

    Thanks for contacting the community.

Please provide me following information so that I can help you further.

    • Open “my computer” and check whether you can see the icon of “CD-DVD”.
    • Are you able to play any other CD-DVD on the system?
    • Please check in safe mode with networking. Please switch on the computer and start tapping the F8 key which would take you to Advanced Boot Option screen. Using the up and down arrow key, select “Safe Mode with Networking” to boot the computer into Safe Mode. Check how it works.

    Please revert with the results.

    Thanks & Regards

    Hi Prateek.

There is no CD/DVD icon. I have tried other CD's and none play. Without going into safe mode how do I install the driver and why would Dell not have had the driver pre-installed?

    Thanks.

Do you have an application set up as the default audio CD player? Windows Media Center is a good choice if you do not.

Regarding the Realtek driver, you can download the latest update straight from Realtek's site.

Thank you rdunnill for your reply. Yes I do have Windows Media Player set as the default audio CD player. Still no music will play and the program doesn't even open when I insert a CD. No program opens.

Is it recognized if WMC is opened manually?

I have inserted approximately 6 CD's. When I insert a CD no program opens. When I open Windows Media Player when the CD is already in (I have set all the permaters) nothing happens. As I said initially, the CD/DVD player of this brand new computer is not working and I cannot fathom why that is because it simply should work when you insert a CD, right?

    Hi CLARET

    Sorry for the late reply.

Kindly download Ms fix-it from the below mentioned link:

     http://bit.ly/QCZ40B

Once you click on the link for Microsoft Fix it --> Click Run Now --> Save the file --> Double click on it --> and follow the prompts. If this fails, you can try it manually from the steps below.

You can follow the steps below to delete the Upper and  lower filters from the registry:

    • Click 'Start', and then click 'All Programs'.
    • Click 'Accessories', and then click 'Run'.
    • Type 'regedit', and then click 'OK'. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click 'Allow'.
    • In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    • In the right pane, click UpperFilters.

Note: You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only. If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to step 8.

    • On the 'Edit' menu, click 'Delete'.
    • When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click 'Yes'.
    • In the right pane, click 'LowerFilters'.
    • On the 'Edit' menu, click 'Delete'.
    • When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click 'Yes'.
    • Exit Registry Editor.
    • Restart the computer and see if the issue still persists.

You may refer to the link for more information http://bit.ly/32ERX

    Please reply for further clarifications.
