512mb memory vs 1GB memory???
I recently purchased, and am highly anticipating the arrival, of an inspiron 9100. Here are just some quick specs to help better answer my ?......p4 2.8ghz HT, 40GB hard drive, 128bit Radeon mobility 9700, 15.4" wsxga+ screen....now my ? is whether or not i will really see any difference if i get 512mb memory vs 1GB of memory. since its already ordered the laptop i obviously opted for the standard memory and am going to buy my memory on the web. I am a college student and dont have a ton of money so if its not necessary to get 1GB then i will just get 512. I dont do a lot of gaming but i may here and there play a game such as unreal tournament and i plan on watching movies. If there are other applications or things that i would notice the difference in please let me know of those as well....thank you very much

I think I would reconfigure ordering the minimum amount of ram, then go to crucial to get 2 512mb sticks. They are about $115 each. This is cost effective, and when you are playing vids, you can jump from application to application with absolutely no hesitation. I do it when I study and play Counter-Strike at the same time. I can run Photoshop, CS, Outlook, and my homework on word no problem. Ordering bigger sticks from Dell will always be more expensive. For what its worth...JamesBeezie

i plan on having this computer for a year or two.....do you think 512mb would be a significant amount of memory then? i am thinking of maybe just getting the 1gb now so i dont have to upgrade in the future. and since its ddr i've read to get two identical stick so i dont want to get like a 512 and a 256 stick or having that configuration in the future or whatever. thanks for the help.
also they have 512mb sticks of crucial memory for $82 on zipzoomfly(formerly googlegear)....have you all had any experience w/ them??

Never heard of zipzoomfly. I do know that Crucial guarantees their memory for life but I dont know if they guarantee it through an external outlet. If you do get an extra stick, make sure the MHz matches the stick you already have ie., 333MHz, 400MHz, 277MHz. I think the 9100 takes 400MHz but don't quote me on that. In any case, 1 gig of ram will definately be more than enough for quite a while. Programs just do not need tons of ram and probably won't unless its professional level video editing or program design. For what its worth, I started off with 512mb ram, then upgraded to 1 gig and I notice a significant difference in response time when switching from game mode to application and back again. Good luck!
