600m dead

Sad to say that my 600m is dead. Dell support is stating that the motherboard is bad. The system is refusing to power on with the AC adapter plugged in and when running off batteries it dies if you plug in the AC. Since it won't charge the batteries either I'm stuck. The usual tests were run to see if one of the components was bad but no luck. The system was purchased new 22 months ago so it's not under warranty. I was quoted $700 to replace the MB from Dell but there is no way I'm going to pay that much for a laptop that I could purchase brand new at the same price. On a side note their support was horrible. During one call I was on hold for over 2 hours only to find out that they had transferred me to the wrong department (desktops instead of laptops). I see others have had the same problem with the MB (and with the support). Has anyone had any luck installing a new MB from Ebay, etc? Any other advice?

I also have a 600m with the same power problems.  I have been reading a lot about others with this problem.  I purchased my laptop in Dec 03 and it has only had occasional use so for this to happen is very disappointing.  I had a problem with my Palm Pilot which is 4 years old and particpated in a class action suit which was settled to our advantage and our manufacturers problem so fixed at no charge.  I would think Dell would do this also.  I will open a case tomorrow now that I know of all the folks that have the problem so I get my documentation in shape.  I am leaving  my company, starting my own business, and can not afford to be without the laptop for one single day.  (I am using my company's today).  I will post my case number also.

Appreciate your comments.  I do not suggest that you invest in eBay solutions. Dell should stand by it's product.  Power issues are fundamental, not user issues.
