Battery life decrease on Dell Inspiron 14z after upgrade to windows 8

Hi,

I recently upgraded my Dell Inspiron 14z from windows 7 to windows 8. The main problem I am experiencing is the battery life has significantly decreased. I have done all the power saving options necessary but my battery life is still draining very fast. When on light browsing on the internet, I can barely get 1 hour running from full battery. May I know if its some known problem and if a fix is coming soon?

    Hi waynewong,

There is a update launched by Microsoft for battery issues on Windows 8. I suggest that you install all the windows updates and restart the system.

    I hope this helps.

Please let me know in case of any queries.

    Thanks and regards

Hi, thanks for your answer. The battery problem has been fixed but it was due to the computer being unable to switch between the dedicated graphics card and the in-built graphics card resulting in excess power usage.

I have another problem actually, regarding connecting to my school wifi system. Attached is the link for how to connect to my school wifi via windows 7.

    www.nus.edu.sg/.../NUS-WPA2%20Network%20Configuration%20Guide%20for%20Windows%207.pdf

As windows 8 is still a new operating system, they have not come out with the guide for it yet. I am wondering if you are able to help me diagnose the problem. Thank you.

Sorry for the long post. But this is the step by step instruction on how to connect to my school's WiFi. I did every step but I am still unable to connect.

    1. Click on Windows 7 start menu. Type services.msc and then press Enter

    2. Right click on WLAN AutoConfig. Choose Properties

    3. Change Startup type to Automatic and then click Start. Then click OK

    4. Click on Windows 7 start menu and then click Control Panel

    5. Double click on Network and Sharing Center

    6. Click on Manage wireless networks

    7. Click Add

    8. Click Manually create a network profile

    9. Type NUS as network name. Choose WPA2-Enterprise as Security type. Choose AES as Encryption type. Check Start this connection automatically. Check Connect even if the network is not broadcasting. Then click Next

    10. Click Change connection settings

    11. Click on Connection tab. Check Connect automatically when this network is in range. Uncheck Connect to a more preferred network if available. Check Connect even if the network is not broadcasting its name (SSID)

    12. Click on Security tab. Choose WPA2-Enterprise as Security type. Choose AES as Encryption type. Check Remember my credentials for this connection each time I’m logged on. Choose Microsoft Protected EAP (PEAP) as network authentication method. Then click Settings

Please note: if you are using a common or shared notebook, you should Uncheck Remember my credential for this connection each time I’m logged on.

    13. Check on Validate server certificate and Connect to these servers. Enter .*.nw.nus.edu.sg at the field box. Check Thawte Premium Server CA and thawte Primary Root CA. Check Enable Fast Reconnect. Uncheck Enforce Network Access Protection. Uncheck Disconnect if server does not present cryptobinding TLV. Uncheck Enable Identity Privacy. Choose Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) as Authentication Method. Then click Configure

    14. Uncheck Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any). Then click OK

    15. Click OK

    16. Click Advanced settings

    17. Check Specify authentication mode, Select User or computer authentication from the dropdown menu and Click OK

    18. Click OK

    19. Please enter your one time credentials which will be prompted at your bottom task bar as shown below

    20. Enter Username and Password and Click OK

    Username : (Enter your “Domain\Username”)

    (E.g. of Domain: NUSSTF/NUSSTU/NUSEXT)

    Password : (Enter your Password)

    21. Connected to SSID NUS

my bad battery life was due to the driver i installed for my graphics card. I think you should install the ones listed on the Dell website instead of windows update or the website of the vendor itself.
