Battery problems

In January 2010 I purchased a new 9cell battery for my Inspiron 1720.  I'm now starting to have problems with it.  I'm getting error message stating I should replace the battery.  How long should a battery last?  The battery I purchased in 1/2010 came from Dell (Part #FP269, R955P; Sku #312-0577).

I used to always use my laptop with the power cord, but after I purchased the new battery, I stopped doing that & would use the laptop using only the battery until it was almost fully drained.

I'm just trying to make sure I didn't get a bad battery.

Thanks!

Batteries Last for 300 to 500 cycles or 1 year.

This is why you never see a battery warranty longer than 1 year ever from anyone.

Batteries do not last longer if they are not charged.  If you use a battery once and then

leave on the shelf for a year you can have that issue where its dead.

If you don't need the mobility, you can remove the failing battery and leave it out. Always use the adapter alone and shutdown properly--just as you would shutdown a desktop. One drawback is bios updates will not install without a working battery. Since replacement batteries cost over $100 it's better to save the money for a replacement computer. BTW, today's lithium batteries should not be drained to empty or near empty.
