Cracked

I've recently discovered that there is a crack on the back of my monitor on the lower left hand side.  I dont misuse the computer, so maybe it's just wear and tear? It's an Inspiron 1150 system, still under warranty.  Would this actaully be covered under my warranty  and the part can be replaced or would I need to buy an entire LCD display?  Here's a pic of it so maybe you can better understand what I'm saying.  It's not of the best quality though  Click Here

I'd try to get it replaced under warranty.  Be polite but insistant.

You'll find out when you call Dell.

Mine did the same thing! I do not know if it is covered under the warranty or not but I do know you it means your hinges have stopped hinging and if you do not fix it the other side will crack as well. If you let it go to long both sides of the screen with actually disconnect from the base and your screen will no longer stay up by itself!!!

I learned the hard way not to ignore the problem. Get it fixed ASAP or it will get a lot worse!

I just noticed the same darn thing.  I did a search here and others are having the same freaken problem.  I bought the extended warranty...but what the %$#? This shouldnt be happening.

Will Dell honour the repair under a goodwill warranty for those not fortunate enough to have paid for the extended?

Same thing has happened to me. The hinge on the right is rubbish, and is causing the screen to fall after tilting a certain degree. The screen also coming apart there where the two halves should be clicked together. I can't get it to click back.

What shall I do? I have no warranty. It will probably be dead expensive to replace the screen....

I've found that I have the same problem on my Inspiron 1150.  I think it is a stress fracture, and since it stays on my desk and I only open and close it once a day during the work week, this appears to be an engineering defect in either material or workmanship on this model.  I just noticed this problem about a month ago.  I bought an Inspiron 6000 about 6 months ago and an Inspiron E1405 2 weeks ago, and they have a new body style.  They may have changed the style due to this issue.  Regardless, I think they should make this right or as a regular customer, I'll give my business to a competitor.  If anyone has had this problem resolved, I'd love to hear about it.  In the meantime, I'm going to call Dell and try to get through their phone maze and "hold " inferno.  Maybe I'll get lucky...

Agreed, I believe it is a design flaw. We paid a lot of money for our laptop and in some cases, Dell repaired the screen/hinges after the warranty (on a one-time only occurance) had expired because it is a known common issue.  However, in buying your next laptop, we have no way of knowing if the same will occur, irregardless of the manufacturer.  You really have to buy the extended warranty.  Unfortunately, with Dell, the regular extended warranty will not cover this repair.

I finally got through on a chat with Dell and they told me that it is a cosmetic defect of the outer skin, but the hinges underneath should be fine.  They informed me that their warranty does not cover cosmetic defects, but if the hinges failed then I should contact them.  I'm not feeling a whole lotta love.  Only time will tell.

How could it be a cosmetic defect if the crack will lead to your LCD screen to break apart?
Send them some pics of the defect and insist they repair your notebook.
