Inspiron 5100, logitech mouse plugged into usb port
Just updated to latest synaptics driver
Tried suggestion in FAQ (to shut down, unplug mouse, reboot), option to disable touchpad still greyed out in mouse properties within Control Panel
Accessed bios, I don't see an option to disable/change settings for touchpad
jumping cursor driving me CRAZY!!! Do I need to uninstall the drivers for the logitech mouse to access settings for the touchpad? Thanks for any help, I'm a poor enough typist as it is, I don't need any help from the touchpad!!!

Ok, I hate replying to my own post, but I finally figured it out in a flash of inspiration. When I first tried the suggestion in the FAQ, I removed the entire USB hub from the back of the laptop, rather than just removing the cordless mouse..."thingy" (whatever the part that plugs into the port is called :))
Anyway, as soon as I removed only the mouse part and left the hub in, that allowed access to the touchpad settings upon reboot. After an hour or so of typing, I found that setting both sensitivity controls completely to the right, no more erratic cursor movement!
I've posted my fix in hopes that some other poor soul may find their solution in my erratic cursor-free post
