IEE 1284.4 Compatible Printer
I don't know if this is the correct board for this question but here goes. When I restart my Inspiron 600m laptop (WinXP-Pro) I am often greeted by an error message to the effect that the IEEE 1284.4-compatible printer is preventing the computer from entering the standby mode. (I have sometimes noticed that when I thought the computer was in standby--and unplugged--for a few hours it had evidently gone totally dead). I don't know what the heck the IEEE printer is--the only printer I have is my HP LaserJet, which shows up as such. The only other printer that shows up in Printers is Adobe PDF, which is probably for Adobe Acrobat 7.0. Any idea what this IEEE-compatible printer is, where it came from and how I can get rid of it?

I have no idea what this printer is, either. On the other hand, I may be able to explain why your laptop goes dead on standby: standby is to save all the current processes in the RAM, which still requires power to maintain; hibernation saves all the current processes to the hard drive and shuts down the computer, thus requiring no power to maintain but takes longer to power up.joe_mcguire

A discussion with HP revealed that my HP LaserJet MFP Printer (3330) is the issue. The printer will not let a computer to which it is attached go into standby because it has to poll the machine. However, if the printer is disconnected, such as by pulling out the USB plug, there is no problem.

System Standby Error!
The device driver for the 'IEEE 1284.4 compatible printer' device is preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try again. If the problem persists, you may need to update this driver.
