Inspiron 4000 mouse problems

Ok i have had this computer for about 3-4 years now and not until a few months ago has it givin me any problems. I have reinstalled the driver for the touchpad and its still acting up. The problem is the left click doesnt work at all. I have no idea why. I checked properties for the mouse and everything is fine. I now have to use a p/s 2 mouse and I really hate doing so. Even when i change the setting to make the right click the primary button it works for awhile and the computer changes it back to the left click automatically. I have no idea why? Does anyone think that the whole mouse pad may have to be replaced?
When I use the external mouse everything works great but then sometimes the mouse starts to move by itself and it freezes for about 2 mintues or so. I really think something might be wrong with the touch pad.

    Hi,

You can get a 2nd hand palm-rest with touchpad for around $30 from Parts-people. If the pointer wanders, it may be the touchstick on the keyboard. They are a common cause of this issue.

Thanks for the reply. So where can I buy what ever it is I need to buy? You see if i was to take off the external mouse I can move the mouse but the left click does not work at all. The only thing that works is the right click. And then sometimes it freezes (the mouse) and then it comes back. So the item you said I should order will it fix that problem as well? And If i took this computer to a repair place how much do you think they would charge me to fix this?

Yes i have tried using that to no help. I even switched the setting arount to make the right click the primary so I can use the touch pad but then after a second or so it stops working all together so I have to use the external mouse
