Inspiron 8600 Power-Up Problem

I've had my Inspiron 8600 just under three weeks now, and ever since I received it I've had a problem simply powering the machine up. When I press the power button, many times the three keyboard status lights plus the power light light up for about 10 seconds then go blank. The display never powers up and I don't think any of the drives or processors power up. Usually if I close the display and/or unplug the machine from the outlet, it'll restart just fine. I thought this was irregular, but not a huge deal. But just recently, I've had trouble powering it up at all, having to wait about an hour or so before I can start it again, which indicates to me that the machine may be overheating and needs to cool down before it'll start. I ran FanGUI, and it measured the processor temperature at about 145. Is that high?

I can't figure out what's wrong. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I need a solution FAST. My 21-day money-back guarantee is almost up!!!

Thank you.

I would call Dell, and in a hurry. 145 degrees is HOT, I believe it suppose to be around 60. I like the 8600, it is the coolest (temperature wise) of most laptops. Is your fan operating? But most important right now is to CALL DELL.

Is that 60 Celsius or Farenheit? My machine's running at 145 Farenheit, which is about 62 Celsius. Is that still too hot?

Oppps, maybe I should read. Sorry, but according to this forum, it is about normal. (145 degrees) Oh well, I would still call Dell anyway. That's what warentees are for. I still have a problem understaning why someone would come here to get questions answered while their machines are still covered. If I even suspect a problem, I call Dell's tech support first. That's what they get paid for. When I had the 3700, they were calling me by my first name before I even said who I was.  (That's a joke, but being new to laptops, I called a lot.) It's kind of like having a new baby and always running to the hospital everytime the baby sneezes. (Did that too!!)

that is exactly what happened to my 8600.  i only had it for 2 days when it started to not boot up.  it's not heat related on mine because the computer might be turned off for 5 hours and still wont boot up (sometimes it does).  dell sent a tech to replace the whole bezel with the power button is.  dell tech support was so sure its the switch.  well the tech replaces the part and same problem exist.  then he calls dell tech support and they told him they are sending a motherboard, 2 ram cards and a processor to replace on mine.  i said no way, that computer is going back after having owned it for only 2 days.

well, i ordered a replacement on april 8th.  it is on a 10 day lead time.  the new 1350 pc card is holding it up.  what also made me mad was they are sending me the new 8600  without the serial and parallel ports, trackstick and irda.  ETA is april 23.

request for a refund or exchange immediately before your 30 days runs out.

P.S. Has anyone been able to get Dell to pick up the tab for shipping the machine back to them? Just curious.

That's what they do. I never paid for shipping to return a system. They now send a box to you that has instructions for DHL/Airbourn Express to pick up. That's what they did for me when I had to return the system.

There have been many reports of this problem with the 8600 not powering up properly. Dell and others have thought that the problem was in the power strip. A while back I suggested that the problem was thermal in nature. I am now sure that this is the case. Reason:- From a cold boot the 8600 requires about 15-30  presses of the power switch before it will turn on (when left in the air con computer room). When left in the sun (on a window ledge for a few hours) the machine boots first time every time. Come on dell get your act together, your credibility is plummeting over the 8600 and 9100 flagship laptops.
