Go back to a restore point prior to the update and see if that fixes the problem.

i'm not sure what caused it. i was using it all day at work, took it home and started it up only to see a black screen. i have automatic updates turned on so i don't know if that occurred sometime in the process. i doubt that is my problem though... i reformatted and without any microsoft security updates, the computer does this once the video driver is installed. good luck with your situation.

I suggest to verify that your suspend switch isn't sticking. The pin is located above the Keyboard LEDs, this may require for you to remove the hinge cover to verify. Hope that this helps.

is the suspend switch the little peg that stands up so that the monitor goes black when the notebook is shut? it appears that mine is crooked and "stuck" down. when i close my laptop (i am in vga mode) the screen does not go black. i am assuming this means that the switch feature is disabled and not used in vga or safe mode?

how do i fix this problem. i tried to kind of pop the switch free, but it seems kind of solid and i don't want to break it. also, i do not know how to open up the case to gain access to it?

please advise.

p.s. hopefully this is the problem because it seems like a much easier fix than the whole lcd?

Try removing the LCD hinge cover by laying your LCD all the way back, facing the portable on the left side of the hinge cover there is a small indention, get a small flathead screw driver and pry off carefully.

Then check underneath that small pin to see If you can get it to move up and down.

a million thanks to you!!! i popped that piece off, looked at the switch and there is a little broken piece of plastic. to make sure that is the problem i booted up and everything works great!!! remember this diagnosis because i have been all over the tech forums and nobody knew what was up. also, it really seems like the dell chat guy was a little too quick to say he was 100% sure it was a bad lcd screen.

if i could do it myself for $15 that would be worth it, but i talked to dell and they said it would need to be serviced there at a minimum charge of $199. therefore i am just going to take the actual reed switch out and use the current plastic power piece i have.

The LCD hinge cover can be replaced by you. Contact our spare parts department at 1-800-372-3355 for price quote of the LCD hinge cover or they may call it the power button panel.
