Laptop for UDK

I want to use my laptop for programs like Maya and 3ds Max, and Unreal Develpment Kit. What is a good laptop for UDK? These are the minimum specs I need to use UDK:

  • Windows Vista 64 SP2
  • 2.0+ GHz multi-core processor
  • 8 GB System RAM
  • NVIDIA 8000 series or higher graphics card
  • Plenty of HDD space

The Precision M6500 is the system to buy.

That is what you'll need to run that package well.  Anything less will hamstring it.

If you can't afford a notebook of that caliber, buy a desktop - it'll cost 50% less and handle it well.

Decide where you want to compromise, then.  You're not going to get stellar performance from those applications on anything other than a high-end Precision - so, if you're wiling to take low performance, a mid-range notebook will work.  However, finding one with the video chip you're looking for may not be easy - many vendors were very badly burned by nVidia's faulty engineering and have dropped nVidia in many product lines as a result.  Again - it's a matter of compromise.  If you can't afford a full-blown mobile workstation, you may get by with something less - kind of like squeezing a family of five into a Civic rather than going for an Accord.
