Latitude E6500 and Broadcom USH
I am trying to resolve a driver issue. I have an E6500 and after installing XP, patches, drivers and the like, I am left with one hardware device not found. It is listed within the Device Manager as "5880" and after some investigation it appears to be the Broadcom USH CV for a fingerprint reader. I do not have a fingerprint reader installed. I have extracted the drivers from another system and pointed the hardware wizard there but to no good effect. Anyone have a solution to this puzzle?

I currently have a E6500 with the OEM version of XP on the machine out of the box - I also do not have a fringerprint reader on this test machine. Under the device manager I am showing under the heading of Credential Vault Device a Broadcomm USH CV w/o Fingerprint Sensor
It appears this is a new device for credentials but comes without a fingerprint sensor. The new Dell ControlPoint software is way different than what was on their D series Latitudes, I am learning what I can about the ControlPoint suite as I type this. I am currently working on creating a build image for my company using our XP installer disk, I will post my steps once I get to the point to install the USH CV.
OK - I think I got this one - it was a little trickey to locate the software - download the update from the Dell drivers and downloads page for the Latitude E6500 -
expand the Applications heading - Look for the document titled - "Dell Driver - ControlPoint Security Manager" - date 11/15/208 - Version 1.01.29
dowload and expand the file, run the installer - this is tied to the Broadcom USH device, once this install was complete I was forced to reboot - after the reboot it went from a unknown device to the Broadcom USH CV w/o fingerprint reader.

Thanks for the help. I found that I also needed to modify the .INF file associated with this driver. Basically, I had to make the entry for this device to be a little more generic. Within the file cvusbdrv.inf, I modified the Device Section to go from
%USB\VID_0A5C&PID_5800.DeviceDesc%=cvusbdrv.Dev, USB\VID_0A5C&PID_5800&MI_00
to
%USB\VID_0A5C&PID_5800.DeviceDesc%=cvusbdrv.Dev, USB\VID_0A5C&PID_5800.
After that, no more issues.
Followup: After expanding the drivers and modifying the .INF file, I am still having an issue with this device in that the New Hardware Wizard keeps popping up until I manually step through this. When I manually step through, it is pointing to the correct folder and completes fine. It just will not do it on it's own. Any suggestion for this issue?
I am having the same issue here. We automate our build process and have sysprep direct the OS as to where to find and install all the appropriate drivers. We have it working for all devices except the Broadcom USH CV driver. Not only do we see this in the E6400, but also the E4300 and E4200. Not a showstopper, but it adds a manually click through to an otherwise completely automated imaging process.
Hi, I have bought an E6500 to replace a D820, but I find it quite hard to do what I was doing with the previous PC with regards to the smart card reader.
In both machines the card reader appears as an internal USB device.
In the D820 I had the laptop installed as an Ubuntu Linux system. On the Linux System there was a virtual machine (based on VirtualBox) running Windows XP as a guest operating system. The virtual machine allowed me to "pass" the USB card reader to the guest OS and in this way I could happily use the smart card reader from windows.
In the E6500 I have arranged the same setup. Virtualbox tells me that I can pass a Broadcom 5880 USB device to the guest. However, when I do so the Windows XP guest does not have the drivers for it. Unfortunately, I cannot install the Dell drivers for the Broadcom USH in the Virtual Machine, because when I try to execute the file downloaded from DELL, the first things it says is "This is not a DELL E6500".
Any chance to get the drivers in a format that is not so restrictive?

After speaking with some people from Dell, it was decided (because of other issues in addition to this one) to build a new image solely for our E-series laptops; we currently deploy the E6400, E6500 and the E4200. When I built the image, I included the drivers for the fingerprint reader. Not ideal, but it works. After the image is deployed and sysprep does it thing, I install all of the software downloaded from Dell including the security software associated with the fingerprint reader. Once that's complete, no more hardware bangs and everything works as advertised.
Now if someone could tell me how to suppress during install the "WiFi Networks Available" dialog box for the Intel wireless card, I'd be a really happy camper...
