New 700 M Experience

Just wanted to let everyone know about my new 700M since you helped me decide to buy one.

I ordered mine on 9/12 with 2nd day air and it arrived on 9/17. I was very happy with that!

I caught the end of a special promotion and configured it as follows:

1.60 Gz

Free upgrade to 512mb ram (2 dimms)

60 gb hd

24X CDRW / DVD

Free internal wireless

MS Office Small Business

1 yr warranty w/ 1 yr mail-in

$200.00 mail-in rebate

8-cell lithium extra battery

15% off

free 2nd day air

$1745.90 before rebate

$1545.90 total

This is my third Dell notebook. 4500, 8100 and now this. I was looking for a small, powerful unit that ran faster than my co-workers fujistu and got just what I was looking for.

I've been very please so far. The screen is really fantastic. I finally have a notebook I can use in my car on a sunny day! (not while driving of course) I do miss using the docking stations I had set-up for the my 8100. I had one at home and one in the office. I looked everywhere for a usb hub that would include monitor & sound connections but couldn't find one. (do they exist?) I currently hook-up a monitor, a usb hub with my printer, mouse, keboard and Axim cradle, the powercord and sound out every time I arrive home or the office. It's a pretty big pain, especially the monitor. But it's worth it every time I throw this little baby in the briefcase and head out the door. I haven't flown with it yet but I know it's going to be great.

I have it running flawlessly at home with a Linksys b/g wireless hub/router with WEP and MAC filtering enabled. At the office I'm on a ethernet. I rarely use the notebook keyboard but when I do I find it to be really good. There are a couple of keys that are smaller than normal but it wasn't that hard to get used to.

I did have one major problem but Dell CS took care of it in 3 days. The 60 GB HD was a Hitachi TravelStar and it made a loud clicking noise constantly that was driving me crazy. You could hear it in my noisy office and at home it was so loud my wife could hear it across the room. I called Dell and thay asked me to re-seat the drive to see if that was the problem. It wasn't and they sent me a new one that arrived in two days. The new one was Toshiba and it's quiet as a mouse.

The fans almost never come on and when they do, the noise is very low and they turn off quickly.

Overall, I have no complaints and want to thank everyone for posting on this board, you really helped me decide and I'm very happy with the 700M.

Pretty puny with the 4 cell. About 2 - 2.5 hrs. I haven't really cycled it enough yet to get the max out of it. I expect the 8 cell to run much longer but haven't stretched it's legs yet.

I am playing with both the 700M and the 600M now trying to decise which one to keep. I really love the 700M because it looks great and its basically the same machine, except it smaller which I love.  I was having trouble finding a docking port and I called Dell. They told me about a part (A0292863) that has Video and all the other necessary ports.  I might give it a try and keep the 700M and return the 600M.

I know of the Targus USB port replicator but it does not have video Part (243843)
