Please help - Extremely Dim Screen

I have an inspirion 6000 with Windows XP Home. One day I just found my screen extremely dim. So dim I can only see enough to know the power is on and it gets rebooted correctly. My computer is functioning like normal but I cannot see the screen. It's almost a black screen. My battery light is on and I tried another fully charged dell battery from my friends dell laptop. I have already tried using [fn] to brighten up the screen. It didn't have any effect at all. I've also hooked up an external monitor but it didn't show anything on the external monitor. What should I do because my warranty has expired? Is there a recall for the screen because I see this is a problem for a lot of dell customers. Please advise.

I've also hooked up an external monitor but it didn't show anything on the external monitor.

I was going to suggest that it probably the backlight bulb going out until I read that.  Did you use Fn-F8 to toggle the video signal to the external monitor?

There are hundreds of messages on here about dim displays on Dell notebooks, not just your i6000. Do an advanced search at the bottom of this page for dim display.  The recommended fix for this is to take it to an LCD repair shop and have them replace the bulb.  Cost is around $100-$150.

Actually it does work with an external monitor when I press [fn]+f8. So that narrows it down to FL Inverter or Backlight? Is there a way to tell which so that I can order the correct parts? Please advise. Thank you in advance!

In most cases it is the backlight.  Unfortunately, that is the more expensive part of the two to replace.  I've read that a defective inverter can sometimes be detected by a diagnostics test, but not a bad backlight.  You might try running the Dell diagnostics first and see what it finds.

Here are a few links on discussions of further ways to tell whether it is an inverter or backlight problem:
