Studio XPS 16

My laptop has 2 problems

1. If the battery pack is inserted, during boot up , it hangs on Dell logo.  It happens with AC plugged in or not. Now, I just used external AC power and remove battery pack.  The battery can be charge ( 100%)  fully with AC plugged in.

What is the cause for the hanging during boot-up ? Is it battery causing it ?

2. The keyboard is not working anymore. I have to use an external USB keyboard. Have tried all forum suggestions as far as looking at device Manager, Windows 7 OS , driver update, rebooting.  The only thing I have not done is to tear it apart and check.

The back lights are working. None of the keys work.

No more warranty. Bought in 2009.

Please help

Joe

    Hi Joe,

You may try the following steps. Drain the residual power from the laptop:

    • Disconnect any external peripherals (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) from the computer
    • Then remove the adapter and the battery
    • Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds
    • Reconnect the battery and the adapter
    • Try to restart the computer and check

You've mentioned that the system hangs on Dell logo. Will the boot into Windows after that or is stuck on the Dell logo?

If the system boots into Windows, try to reset the BIOS to defaults.

    • Power off the computer
    • Restart the computer, tap ‘F2’ key on the Dell logo
    • This will take you to the BIOS screen
    • Try to reset BIOS to defaults.
    • Press ‘F9’ key once, highlight ‘Yes’, press ‘Enter’
    • Press ‘F10’ key once, highlight ‘Yes’, press ‘Enter’

I would also suggets you run the on-board diagnostics to check the hardware functionality. Restart the computer, press 'F12'  key on the Dell logo -> Select ‘Diagnostics’ from the boot menu -> Please refer to the link if any error code shows up http://dell.to/OUGnqT

Since the keyboard is not working, you may try to reseat the keyboard. Please refer to the service manual http://bit.ly/10g8C5U

Please reply if you have any questions.

    Hi

I followed your instructions. Answers below.

After doing the 'flea power' draining, it still hangs at Dell logo whenever the internal battery is plugged in.

But With only external AC , no problems, boots up. The moment the internal battery is inside with or without AC, it will hang at Dell logo.

Next - I remove the keyboard and  reseat the k/b but still the k/ b cannot work.

BIOS - Setting Default BIOS -   No fault found

What should I do now ?

    Hi Joe,

Thank you for the response. I would suggest you update the BIOS for the computer and check if the issue persists. Here is the link http://dell.to/WZewZy

Note: Before updating BIOS please ensure that:
*Battery is 10%> or >10% charged
    *AC Adapter should be connected
*No external devices (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) should be connected.
*All other programs should be closed and documents saved

I would suggest you to check the keyboard in command prompt window in Safe Mode. Power off the computer -> Restart the computer ->tap 'F8' key on Dell logo 2-3 times -> this will take you to ‘Windows Advanced Boot Options’ -> Choose ‘Safe Mode’ in the Advanced Boot menu(F8) -> When Windows finishes loading in Safe mode -> press and hold the Windows key and press 'R' key. This will open the run window -> type 'CMD' to open the command prompt window -> try to use the keyboard and check.

Please reply if you have any questions.

    Hi Joe,
Thank you for the response. Since the keyboard is not working at all, I would suggest you to replace the keyboard.

Since the system hangs on Dell logo only when the battery is connected, I would suggest you to check the Battery Health:

    • Right click on the battery icon on the taskbar
    • Choose ‘Dell Health Meter’
    • Click on ‘Battery Health’ tab
    • Examine the information shown in the window. Please reply with the results.

You may try to connect an alternate battery. If the issue persists, you may consider replacing the battery. Else, the motherboard may require replacement.

Please reply if you have any questions.

I attached a USB keyboard and it worked.

And if I keep pressing Function key on boot up, it worked. Aprt from that,  F2, F 10  and all keys does not worked .

Changing k/b may not be the solution .

Battery Meter show fully charge !!.

Just cannot boot from internal battery. Hangs at Dell Logo.

    Using AC  power-  no problems.

based on the 2 issues, do you think the  motherboard could be faulty. as the k/b  could not activated by the power.

I also run diagnosis test - All positive results .   No error !

please help , before I decide to dump the laptop

    Hi Joe,

Thank you for the response. The CMD in Windows Recovery Environment is free from any software interference. Keyboard not working in that environment points at the keyboard as a possible culprit. However, it could be the system board as well if the point of contact with the keyboard is faulty.

It appears that you could not test you with a good known battery. If not viable, you may want to try replacing the motherboard. There is a high likelihood that both issues get addressed. If the keyboard still persists, replacement keyboard may still be required.
