USB/FIREWIRE external HD problems

I am trying to help a coworker get her Lattitude X200 to recognize a portable HD.  The HD is a Hitachi 80GB 2.5" in a Bytecc enclosure.  The problem we are having is with the Firewire connection.  The computer recognizes the drive and allows transfers, but it cuts out after a few minutes.  It comes up with an error in Windows, and the drive is then gone.

We have tried using an external power source for the drive but the problem persists.  The USB interface seems to work fine, but it is 1.1 which is much slower than the Firewire connection.

Also, her IEEE 1394 connection is a 6 pin connection, but like I said it has the same problem with or without the external power source.

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Have you tried using different cables?  Also have you applied all of the Firewire updates in your OS?  If you have not done both of those,  I would start there.

Cheap cables have been known to cause this type of problem,  and IIRC,  there are a large number of firewire issues which are addressed in the XP hot-fixes and service pack,  so you should have those all applied as well.  I use several external firewire devices with my C840,  and I don't have any problems with the devices "dropping".

Thank you JersWork.  The updates had already been done, but the new firewire cable did the trick.  Thanks again.
