on a 600, you get a much smaller screen
on an 8600, you can get the same processors as the 600.
you get slightly less battery life on the 8600
the keyboard on the 600 is very flimsy
the ATI 9700 is a much nicer card than the 9000, and is better if you plan to have any pictures on the computer
there is more room on the keyboard for your hands on the 8600
The 8600 has a sturdier chassis than the 600
you can get a better screen on the 8600
you get a better power supply on the 8600
In my opinion, the 8600 is better than the 600m in everything but portability. It is fairly heavy, but 3lbs lighter than my Inspiron XPS

Oh, no. Don't get rid of that. I don't think that an 8600 has the guts to serve as a DRS computer. The one and only laptop I would recommend for that post is an Inspiron XPS like mine. (that is a secondary purpose of the designers of the laptop)It is still portable, but you sacrifice a lot of battery life with an XPS. All those nice cooling fans and big processors.I have no trouble convincing my Inspiron to do something that requires a lot of power. I have bogged an 8600 down on pics that took an XPS a little less than 10-15 seconds to process. Games,,,,,,,, you have met your match. Doom 3 would run on this computer no problemo. :~)The XPS also has the best onboard sound system (4 speakers + battery subwoofer = amazing sound) of all the laptops that Dell has.The wireless LAN range on an XPS outstrips the other laptops, too.Plus the free backpack is very nice for hauling a lot of stuff around in, as well as the computer. It is not as unnecessary as some people would think.But if you are getting an 8600, please do not ditch that desktop. I think you might regret it. The 8600 is a portable computer and is not intended to be a Desktop Replacement System. It is best at what it is designed for, though.mattcowger

I completely disagree about that. The 8600 is a great desktop replacement for most users. Unless you are playing highend games or doing video editing, an 8600 will be more than fast enough.
The wireless tange for the XPS and the 8600 are 100% identical parts and antenna - there is 0 difference.
The backpack is a waste, you can get an equivalent backpack for the 8600 from Targus (its called the Matrix, and I love mine) for $80.
I use one as my primary machine, and spend a good 10 hours per day on it.
Again, unless you spend a lot of time gaming or doing lots of video rendering, the 8600 is a great DTR.Message Edited by mattcowger on 11-21-2004 08:29 PM
