Power down.

 I have my whole system plugged into a six socket surge protector. When not using my computer is it wise to unplug the whole lot or is powering down my computer sufficient enough?

    tingtong,

    That is a personal preference. I leave my PC on all the time. The monitors use sleep mode.

    "Okay Chris,  I just received my XPS 420-Q6700 Processor, 4 GB Ram at 800MHz, Vista Home Premium 32Bit, 500GB HD , Dell Bluetooth Pkg, Dell 22" Ultrasharp Monitor.  My problem is I also leave my computer on all the time and want to Power the unit down but when I place it in Sleep Mode, or Let it go into sleep mode by itself, it will not respond when I want to wake it.  What happens is the screen comes on and powers up then immediately switches gears and goes back into sleep (but, it so nicely tells me that it is "Entering Power Save" " Aauto Detect Digital Input") where it will not wake up no matter what without my shutting the power off and then turning it back on.  You seem like a very knowledgeable person.  Any solutions for this problem?

    Any help would be appreciated.  I have contacted Dell and they did a remote, we thought it was fixed until the next time I put it in the sleep mode.  Guess what?  Not fixed.  I have sent 2 additional emails to them as I was instructed to do and have not received a call back.

    Thanks,"

    Chris,

    I found the post above this one from Sunedaz...I am having the exact same problem. I just got my XPS420 2/15/08, set it up and the problems started. I have a Q6600, 3GB ram, 500GB HD, Bluetooth hub w/media card reader, mouse and keyboard, 128MB ATI HD 2400 PRO, etc.

    You asked him for the monitor model.

    Mine is  Dell 22" UltraSharp #SP2208WFP.  Please help. I haven't contacted Dell yet. I'm TRYING to fix on my own. I thought I did it, but the last time it did the same thing. I sometimes don't think the actual PC IS sleeping, just the monitor entering power saving mode. I have to shut it down and start again.

    All,

    * Plug all USB devices into the rear of the PC
    * Right click anywhere on the desktop
    * Click Properties
    * Click the Screen Saver tab
    * Choose one and set it for one minute (or whatever you want)
    * Click Apply
    * Click the settings or Power button to the right of the globe
    * You should be on the Power Schemes tab
    * Under the heading Power Schemes choose Home/Office Desk
    * Under Settings for Home/Office Desk
    - Turn off monitor = Never
    - Turn off hard disks = After 3 mins
    - System standby = Never
    * Click Apply
    * Click the Advanced tab (if listed)
    remove any checks
    * Click Apply- OK if you made any changes
    * Click the Hibernate tab
    remove any checks
    * Click Apply - OK

    Now, nothing should be in sleep or hibernate mode. Leave the PC running all day. When you step away from the monitor, tun the monitor off. How does the system react?

    Chris,

    What is this supposed to do to the system? Is it 'if it dosn't sleep it should be able to be awake?' My monitor will go to sleep all by itself within 3 sec.-2 mins. after windows desktop appears if I've put the PC to sleep and wake it back up ONLY IF I HAVE THE DVI CABLE HOOKED UP (VGA WORKS FINE)

    I'm going to try this tomorrow if I get a chance although I don't think it'll make any difference besides wasting my time.

    I have a new monitor on the way. I hope it doesn't have the same problem.

    thanks for the help. I'll let you know how I make out in a day or two.

    Ree185 - Did your new monitor help your problem.  I just got back from a family medical emergency so my problem is still pending.  Are you or were you as frustrated as I am?

    Thanks,

    Sunedaz

    Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you.  I had a family medical emergency.

    Anyway, Monitor is a Dell UltraSharp Wide 22 (2208WFP)

    Hope this helps.  I am still having the problem.

    Thanks.

    Sunedaz,

    Sorry to hear about your emergency. Here's the deal.The new monitor was doing the same thing. I called tech support and they changed my power settings to:

    Monitor: sleep after 30 min.

    PC: sleep after 1 hr.

    Hard drive: sleep - NEVER

    They also uninstalled my anti-virus software and reinstalled an updated version. The monitor seems to work fine now. If I click the start button and then click the power button icon, everything sleeps and the monitor wakes up. If I've done this I have to wake the PC with the power button on the tower, not the mouse or keyboard. If I click start, then the arrow and then click on 'sleep', the monitor doesn't always wake up. I can live with things this way. I just get up and walk away from it or I turn the monitor off and leave it.

    My biggest concern is that I'll be hurting or shortening the life of my PC and Hard drive because it is always on. The monitor powers down when it's supposed to, but unless I put mine to sleep and wake it with the PC power button, the PC never sleeps. What are your thoughts?

    I have been experimenting with the Power Options under Control Panel.  This has not been working and has wasted my time.  I am retired on a fixed income and like you spent a great deal of money on this purchase.  One I expect to last quite a while.  I have e-mailed Dell numerous times and all they want me to do is all the same stuff over again.  If they do not call me today by 3:00 I will be calling a supervisor at Dell tomorrow.  We should not have to go through this after we put our trust in Dell with a expensive purchase.

    Chris asked my for my Monitor model which I gave to her--she/he has not responded yet.  I really do not think it is the monitor.

    These were my experiments:

    POWER BUTTON TO WAKE FROM SLEEP MODE AFTER DOING THE FOLLOWING:
    Close all applications
    Physically put into sleep mode
    Close all applications
    Let system put in sleep mode

     Leave all applications open
     Let system put in sleep mode
     Leave all applications open
    Physically put into sleep mode
    USING MOUSE TO WAKE FROM SLEEP MODE AFTER DOING THE FOLLOWING:
    Close all applications
    Physically put into sleep mode

     Close all applications
    Let system put into sleep mode
    Leave all applications open
    Let system put into sleep mode

    Leave all applications open
    Physically put into sleep mode

    SOMETIMES THEY WORK AND SOMETIMES NOT.

    I will advise what happens.
