U2715H, Surface Dock Issues

Hello - I recently purchased a Surface Dock for my Microsoft SurfaceBook.  I am able to connect the monitor using the Mini DisplayPort cables and for the most part have a good connection.

However I occasionally get screen flicker, especially with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.  Eventually it gets to the point that I have to disconnect anything to get any work done.

I reached out to Microsoft support and eventually found out that this monitor is listed as not-compatible with the SurfaceDock:

www.microsoft.com/.../troubleshoot-docking-station-surface-dock

Just to be safe I also:

  • Updated the SurfaceDock firmware to the latest version
  • Connected directly to the monitor without the SurfaceDock, no problems there as before the dock
  • Tried two recommended cable from Cable Matters (Mini DisplayPort to Mini DIsplayPort and Regular DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort)
  • Disabled DP 1.2 from the monitor menu

Other solutions:

The tech did say that I may be able to update the firmware on the monitor, but I'm not sure if that's possible, I can't seem to find anything online to support that.  Is that something I can try?

Are there any other solutions that I'm not aware of that someone can point me in the right direction?

Are there any other solutions being worked on?  I read in another post that there is some kind of dongle or other cable being developed that could help?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Unfortunately, there are no customer accessible firmware updates. Microsoft gave up on the dongle. Notice they mention U2715H A00. We are up to A02. You will need to get a refurbished exchange to get an A02.

Hi Chris - thanks for getting back to me.  Is there a way I can tell which firmware this monitor is using right now?

The Service Tag is 1NLYY02. It also does say REV A02 on the back, which I'm guessing is the firmware version.  It was manufactured in August of 2015.

You have the latest firmware so it should be working with their hardware and software. The fact that the monitor works connecting directly to the Surface Book points to the dock. You should post the issues on the Surface Forum and see if other Surface users can relate their Dell monitor experience and if they can offer some insight or troubleshooting steps.

    Hi,

Chris I'm having this same issue. I have two U2715H monitors I'm trying to hook up to the Surface dock via displayport (daisy chained). Similarly, I can hook them up directly to the surface and it works in the daisy chained configuration.

I've updated dock firmware and am using high quality mDP to DP cable.  How do I check the firmware of the monitors? Would updating it help? And if so, how do I go about doing that?

    Thanks!

As far as I know, A02 is the latest revision. But, no, I have not heard that a different monitor revision addressed any Microsoft Dock issues. No, the firmware update is only done in our service centers on New and returned monitors. The only way to get a monitor with an updated firmware is via a used monitor exchange.

The fact that they work in daisy chained configuration without the dock means that the monitors are functioning correctly. The fault has to be the dock or how the dock is communicating to the Surface. We do not have any mechanism in place to allow customers to update the firmware on this monitor. The revision is on the rear label.

Do you know if the updated firmware will fix this issue? And is it possible to send them in to have you do it?

I ended up giving up and just manually disconnecting the power and the monitor when I take the computer away, but I'll never be able to use multiple monitors unless I buy new ones.
