How (exactly) does DISASTER RECOVER work?

Hi all

I'm having a hard time trying to understand how does exactly the DISASTER RECOVERY saveset work. I find no clearly understandable official documentation.

It seems to explode into multiple savesets, like All does, but these include DISASTER RECOVERY itself, unlike All.

Also, it sometimes seems to create strange savesets like \\?\VOLUME{something} and other times it does not.

Since I used automated tools to check the performed savesets (from NetWorker Reports) against the expected savesets (from NetWorker configuration), this is really a problem.

Thanks

DISASTER RECOVERY is simply an xml file that contains all system related information, line , HDD information, partition information, and so on. This is required for bare metal recovery only. Refer the NetWorker Administrator guide for more details on this saveset.

Thanks. That of the XML does not explain why sometimes it saves a \\?\VOLUME{something}.

The \\?\VOLUME is the system partition on your OS.

    Hi Noel,

The XML file is the VSS BCD )Backup Component Document) which, as crazyrob explained, contains al the information about the files to be backed up by the specific writers, in this case the System Writer.

You can find out the volumes you have by running:

vssadmin list volumes, and you will see that  the "name" for each of them is something like you said:

    \\?\Volume{240a50e8-fe30-11e3-8550-806e6f6e6963}\

Also, to know exactly the files to be backed up, you can start diskshadow and logging all outputs to a file by starting a Command Prompt and launching this command:

    diskshadow /l c:\diskshadow.out

From the diskshadow prompt, issue the following commands:

    reset
    list writers
    list writers status
    list writers metadata
    list writers detailed
    list providers
    exit

The output of all the above commands will be found in c:\diskshadow.out. The output can use useful to see the list of files which are reported by the VSS writers to be included and excluded by the backup.

    Thank you,

    Carlos
