If the router is hard-set for speed and duplex, the port on the switch also needs to be hard-set. See the following link to the online CLI Guide for the Ethernet Configuration Commands:
Before disabling auto-negotiation, you must disable auto mdix. If you are using a straight-through patch cable and the router interface is using mdi (typical mode if the router does not have a dedicated uplink port", you would need to configure the switch port to use mdix mode using the "mdix on" command.
If both the router and switch are configured for auto-negotiation, they will negotiate the link using the highest capability available to both devices (10full if the router does not support a higher setting).
Using auto-negotiation on one device and hard-set speed/duplex on the other device will create a duplex mismatch. In this case the link will be established at half duplex.
thanks for the quick answer !
that means the best solution is to setup both sites: router and switch
to AUTO Negotiation ?
if both sites are on AUTO Negotiation, can I set then MDI/MDIX on the switch on AUTO ?
I dont' know what exact supports CISCO 836: MDI or MDIX but I cannot find dedicated uplink port.
