hi. i just started using dsl and didn;t read directions. i did not know how to get offline as there were no connection icons to click on!!! soooooooooo i clicked on broadcom and wow!! connection icon in the taskbar. i did not realize what i had done. now my dsl goes through this broadcom. i do not know what is and i do not want to use it. i tried to delete the icons and the shortcut i made on the desktop but i lost my dsl by doing this!!! help!!!! .
i don't have a laptop. i am using a dell deminsion desktop!!! i really messed up!! i do not understand what broadcom even is!!! please help!! the e mail address for me on this site is not correct.
Broadcom is the brand name of the wired network adapter that you sue to connect thru your DSL connection to the internet. Try a System Restore to a point before you accidently deleted the icon.
Start>All Programs>System Tools>System Restore and follow the prompts.
jim thanks for your interest!! i am not concerned about the icons. i do have them back
it looks like broadcom is used for multiple pcs or shared pcs i am not into any of that. i just want my single pc without broadcom. i cannot use system restore because i brought out the broadcom the day my dsl was hooked up. prior to that i used dial up and so i do not know what the heck i am doing. i am always nibbing into stuff i shouldn't i guess!!! my dsl won;t do anything and i am not paying dell a dime. i have a warranty but of coarse, it is for hardware!!! i want to know if i remove the broadcom program will my dsl still work??? help!!! thank you!!!
i am trying to read what info is available from broadcom but this is all way over my head!!! are you trying to tell me that no matter what i did the dsl would have ran through that program regardless??? and i need to leave it alone???? when i talk to other folks they do not have a connection or disconnect icon in their taskbar. i do and that is what i thought i needed!! i was wrong. i was just looking for a way to disconnect from the internet. not knowing at the time that dsl does not run when i shut down my pc. thanks!!
I believe "Broadcom" is a brand name which may refer to:
* the piece of hardware and / of
* software used to control the hardware
As hardware, to say you want the connection without Broadcom is like saying you want to drive to the grocery store without the volvo. "Broadcom" hardware is the vehicle you ride in.
Generally as far as hardware, Windows XP is self-healing and when you shut down the system and start it up again, Windows goes out and finds and fixes all that it can.
As far as the software side (if any), Windows XP has a fall-back position, so even if the software goes away, there may be ways to use plain configuration steps to have the functionality anyway.
If you do Start | Run and gather the information from
IPCONFIG /ALL
it may help.
You can get back out of that Black screen by typing
EXIT
press Enter
