I am looking at a problem with my Sister-in-laws laptop:
Dell Inspiration 6000
When using a dial-up connection to the internet (ISP is OK, works on my PC and I work for the telco but not the ISP part), the laptop connects OK, I get icon and IP settings. The laptop doesn't seem to be trying to use the dial-up connection. I can ping the localhost but can't ping the DNS servers or any internet address. No internet apps are working (IE, Norton update etc).
Things I've tried:
Disable all other network connections (Ethernet, Wirless, 1394)
Removed and readded dial-up connection
tried from different line
rebooted plenty of times
I can't understand why this doesn't work. Any help will be greatly apreciated!
Check the Internet Explorer/Internet Options and make sure there are no dialup connections listed in the connections section. That is what I.E. uses to determine how to access the Internet. That may not be the entire problem but the first thing to check. To access the Internet Options, in I.E., click Tools then Internet Options then the Connections tab. There should be nothing set in this panel.
(BTW, I'm an old Network and data tech and my screen name is taken from the TTC "Fireberd" T1 tester).
