This is a very long story, so, to start, I have a Dell Inspiron 600m with newly installed Windows XP Professional (with SP2) (newly installed meaning today). I installed Windows from the CD without any outright problems, and installed all of the Dell drivers on my Dell Resource CD. I have had the computer for over a year, originally with Windows XP HE.
We bought a copy of XP Pro and installed it today. I followed the CD's directions and online directions by the letter and can't think of anything I would have done to cause the problem below.
The main problem, as of now, is that my ethernet card fails to recognize the Broadcom driver it is supposed to work with. That driver was not, surprisingly, on the Dell resource CD, so I had to download it (Broadcom 440, but I'm going to try the other one too) from Dell Support onto a USB drive and then install it on my computer, which also went smoothly. I went through the process of searching for the driver folder by folder but my card didn't find it. My ethernet card still has a yellow question mark in the device manager, though. I'm at a loss as to what to do.
If anyone can help me get the ethernet card to work, I would greatly, greatly appreciate it. Until this morning it functioned perfectly.
I don't have any personal files on the computer and reformatting the hd/reinstalling windows is fine by me. Any suggestions?
CD wise, I have the original Dell CDs that came with my computer, the XPHE one and the resource CD, my wireless card installation CD and my new XP Pro CD and packaging.
When doing a fresh install of XP on your laptop the first pieces of software that you should install are the Dell Notebook System Software and the Intel chipset driver.
After those two pieces of software have been installed you can then go on to install your video, audio, modem etc drivers.
I would suggest to you that when doing a fresh install that you should get the latest drivers from the Dell download site as they are likely to be newer than the ones you received on your CDs.
I have taken the liberty of linking all the downloads for your model below.
Can you help me? I did a reinstall of windows xp pro on my inspiron 5100. I did do the chip set, drivers for audio, video, modem and notebook. The only yellow question mark I have left is on pci card. I tried using my cable modem with the ethernet connection and it wouldnt recognize it as new hardware. When I used the usb connection, it worked (but I had to find the drviers for it also) So my question is........what ethernet card does my laptop have? I have spent a great deal of time locating which dia up modem I have. So how do I know which driver to use for the ethernet card and how do i handle the pci card driver? Thank you so much.
I'm having a driver problem as well. I guess I'm really green when it comes to figuring out the technical side of computers....
Being I can't connect to the internet, is there a way to download the driver information to a CD and upload that way?? If at all possible, please shed some light on this situation.
jjwoods: click on product support above, then Service and Warranties, then enter your tag number. Select the original configuration tab, and you will see a detailed list of everything that went into your machine. That should tell you what ethernet card you have. Probably a Broadcom 440. I think the pci card with the yellow warning is likely your wireless card, which is the only PCI component in your notebook. The detail list will tell you which one is installed.
If you do not have access to the internet.........i did thru another pc..........i understand dell will sell you a resource cd. or use a friend's, there is alot of drivers, chip set, etc. to download. Do you have your resource cd that could have been delivered with your pc?
Clearly you have access to the internet. Download the files, transfer them to CD, and install them on your laptop. You don't need to get a disk from Dell.
