Hello,
I have a Windows 2000 ICS host that connects to the internet via a DSL
modem. I am wondering if shared files, on a peer to peer network, are
secure. Configuration is as follows:
ICS HOST
Windows 2000
NIC#1 is connected to the DSL modem and has ICS enabled and file
sharing disabled, Client for Microsoft Network is disabled.
NIC#2 is used for the peer to peer network and has file sharing and
Client for MN enabled.
Are the shared files on the host secure from intrusion over the
internet?
ICS CLIENT
Windows 98SE
As an ICS client, its only NIC provides internet connection and peer
to peer connection. File sharing is enabled and Client for MN is
enabled.
Are the shared files on the ICS client secure from intrusion over the
internet?
Thanks,
karlo

Without a firewall of some kind, this system is potentially vulnerable. Ensure that you have updated Windows 2000 with the latest available updates at
Windows Update. You may want to consider some form of software firewall, as well; common recommendations seen on this forum are ZoneAlarm, BlackIce, Norton Personal Firewall, and McAfee Personal Firewall.

If the host is vulnerable, the client becomes vulnerable, too. Ensure the steps above have been taken to secure the overall network, and the client should be reasonably well-protected. Also, make sure that any available updates for the client's operating system have been downloaded from
Windows Update.

Both host and clients have personal firewalls installed. There is no firewall on the DSL modem. And, the host is directly connected to the DSL modem. There is no router.
Given this and what I described above, are shared files secure? Folks cannot access shared files even if they somehow figure out a user's Windows name and password?
Thanks for your attention. I am not refering to sending files over the internet. I am refering to security of files that are shared over a LAN, using WIndows file and printer sharing feature. The LAN is connected to internet via ICS. Please see my first posting for the nature and context of my query.
And again, I say to be totally secure, encrypt the files. Whether it is a WAN or a LAN, files can be hijacked. the best way would be to use a software firewall to stop unwanted intrusions from leaving your LAN and a router to be the first line of defense.
