IP Address Changed

I have a wireless network that is docked at my Dimension desktop computer.  I have an Inspiron laptap on the network.  My desktop computer cannot access the internet suddenly.  It was working fine on Sunday, then a few hours later, I began receiving error messages.  The laptop works fine.  In doing an ipconfig, I notice that the desktop is using a different address.  I've tried to go to internet options and change the IP address on the desktop to match the laptop, but I still can't access the internet.

I've also tried to do a system restore on the desktop but no matter what date I choose, it tells me it's not able to restore to that date.  I suspect spyware has done some damage on the desktop.

Any tips on how to reconfigure the desktop so I can access the internet?  Thank you.

You dont want any network device on the same network to have the same IP address. It can be a little different like (192.168.1.104 & 192.168.1.102)... What IP address did the Desktop get? Is it like 169.254.xxx.xxx? this is an auto ip from Windows if it can't get it's own IP from the router...

If your Desktop is something similar to your working laptop (ie. 192.168.xxx.xxx), then do this. Go to: Start > run > type 'CMD' then press enter > type 'ping 168.144.165.243' if it replies then your internet is working and 'pinging' a public internet website. Might be a DNS issue at that point.

If you are getting 169.254.xxx.xxx, then there might be a configuration issue with the wireless. Ie. no authentication, etc...

    Hello,

I am afraid that I need a bit more information on the network involved to be able to help.

    1) What type of network do you have? What devices are connecting your Internet to the computers.

    2) What Operating System are you using Windows XP, 98?

    3) Have you verified basic Connections, Cables, and Plugs, etc.

I would be glad to help, but need a bit more info on what all makes up the network.
