modem connection failed

Help my Dad and I have been at this for three days.  He has a Dell Dimension 4550, Linksys router, and siemens modem.  we can not connect to the internet.  Error message is can not find modem address.   The modem and router work, another computer is able to access it so the problem is not with them.  Ethernet board has also been changed.

Are you sure that is the error message you are getting "can not find modem address"?  The router should be making the connection to the modem and thus should never even know the modem is there.  Might the error message really be that it can't obtain an IP address?

Try downloading and running winsockfix for Windows XP from the Here and see if that fixes the problem.  If it doesn't, be sure to post back with the exact wording of the error message.

Steve, thank you for you help, but we have even tried bypassing the router and gone direct to the modem with no success.  The computer acts like it is sending the info but the modem does not react to it, light does not flash.  Laptop computer works fine with the modem.  We are close to backing up all the files on the desktop and reformating to see if that fixes the problem.  If you have any more suggestions I am open to all.  Thanks again.

You don't seem willing to post the exact error message or the output from the ipconfig /all command.  Without that I can't help.  Sorry.

Steve, the IP address, subnet mask, and DHCP server show 0.0.0.0   does this help?

Steve I would love to go to winsockfix but i can not get on the internet with the computer that has the problem.  Am I missing something?   Another bit of info we just found out is if we go back to dialup we can get on the internet.  Should we go back to the dialup to go to the winsockfix site?  I am using my laptop and the wireless to communicate.

Did you try Winsockfix as suggested in my first reply?

If dialup works, then there is probably not a need to download winsockfix.   But, just let me point out that you are able to access the internet.  Whenever someone in a tech support forum asks you download and run something, they are saying this because you obviously are able to get on the internet.  In the future, just remember that you can download to any computer, copy the downloaded file to CD-R or a USB memory stick.  Walk that CD-R or memory stick to the problem computer, copy the file to the computer and then run it.

    See if the following helps:

Steve, bless your heart for all your patience and help.  It seems to be working.  I went to the site on my laptop, tried the steps listed and it seems that the DHCP was not running.  Thank You, Thank You, Thank You for all your help!!!!!!!!
