Networking Inspiron 600m
Good Afternoon:
I hope someone can assist me with a problem I am having with connecting my laptop via wireless networking.
I have an Ispiron 600m laptop. [running Windows XP Professional] It has an Intel PROWireless 2915 Internal Wireless 802.11 a/b/g networking card, an internal 56K modem and integrated network card. I am using a D-Link DI-624 AirPlus Xtreme G 2.4 GHz Wireless Router.
My current configuration is a wired Compaq Presario [running Windows XP Home] using a DI-604 Express EtherNetwork Broadband Router.
Being new at this, my question is: Can I have a wired sytem and a wireless system integrated? How do I configure the PROWireless to be wireless? I have followed instructions precisely, but for some reason it states I have an excellent connection, but when I attempt to access the network I get the error message "Server cannot be found."
Although there is a wireless card installed, does it require an antenna in order to receive the signals from the wireless router? I am baffled!

Hi Steve:After following the setup instructions per the DI-624 manual, I attempted to relaunch my web browser to access the home page. I received the "Cannot find server" error page. My next step I open the Intel PROSet/Wireless panel.Following your instructions [I have done this step before] I get a page stating the following:Windows cannot configure the following connection. If you have configured another program to this wireless connection, use that software. If you want Windows to configure this wireless connection, click "Change advanced settings" click "Wireless Networks Tab" and then select the check box labled "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings."Thank You for responding to my post and assisting me in setting up my laptop for wireless connectivity.Respectfully,Deidre L. I apologize. I have not let Windows manage my wireless connection. Being a novice, I was waiting for further instructions from you. After sending this message, I will begin the process of letting Windows manage my wireless connection and let you know the outcome of the results.

It's the nag again! :smileytongue: Thank You for assisting. I guess I am just an idiot! I cannot access the web through the wireless router, and have to keep switching back to my wired router which I should not have to do.
If it is alright with you, I will get back with you tomorrow evening. It's late and I get up early to go to work. Again, Thank You Ever So Much for assisting me. I truly appreciate all you have suggested.

Hello Steve:
Sorry about the delay in getting back with you. I have been sick for the past 6 days and away from my computer.
Two days ago, while fiddle-farting around with the wireless connections on my laptop, I tried using the default wireless network connectivity, and Voile! I had a wireless access connection.
Now, my question is, how do I configure the "default" wireless connection so it will be secure? I attempted to secure the connection with WPA but then could no longer connect to the Internet wirelessly. I also changed the name of my SSID.
I put in a Profile Name, Operating Mode "Network [Infrastructure], and attempted to change the Network Authentication to WPA Personal or WPA2-Personal. I am not sure if I should check "Enable 802.1x, and if so, which "Authentication Type" should I choose for the most secure authentication? Data Encryption offers only two choices WEP [I have heard is a wimpy security choice] or CKIP?
Under the "Advanced" button, I was not sure what to do in this area.
Any Assistance or Suggestions you have are Greatly Appreciated!

First, you don't want to enable 802.1x authentication. For help setting up WPA encryption, see if the following article from PC Magazine helps:

Your router allows you to connect up to 4 computers by wired ethernet and many more by wireless. If you connect your laptop by wired ethernet, then that will take precedence over any wireless connection you make from the same computer.
When you attempt to connect by wireless, you can you see your wireless router by going to Network Connections, right clicking your wireless network icon and selecting "View Available Wireless Networks"? If so, can you select your network and click on the Connect button?
