Networking, what do I need?

I have a Dimension 8250 with a ProSet II card.  I bought a D-Link wired router to run another computer, but running WIndows 98.  I also have high speed internet.  For the last few weeks, I have been having lots of probleming connecting and the speed of the connection varying.  For the last few months, since I bought the router, the speed has always been varying.  What do I need to do?  I spent all weekend puttering around with differents options by following up on other messages from other users, and now the latest, running a spyware program.  But sitll to no avail.  What is missing?  Even at one point of checking out things, doing properties on my LAN connection, I don't have any option for checking/unchecking the box that says something about internet connection sharing.  I am running Windows XP.  What seems to be the problem?  Should I format the whole thing and start over?  Could something possibly have been deleted when running programs that clean up the registry?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

You do not need Internet Connection Sharing with a Router.  Are you saying that you can connect to the internet from both computers, but the speed varies on both computers from day to day?  Does the speed vary if you connect just one computer directly to the high speed modem?  Have you tested both computers directly connected to the modem?  What kind of high speed service is it, cable or dsl?  Please do a bit more troubleshooting to answer the above questions, and post back with your results.  You can conduct speed tests on your systems at http://www.dslreports.com/tools  Run the Speed Test near that bottom of that page.

Hey there Steve.  Ok, yes, I can connect to the internet with both computers, one at a time, but directly to the high speed modem.  When connected through the router, ny speed varies not only from day to day, but every 5 seconds it changes from 490bps to 10bps and vice versa......sometimes hitting speeds of up to 31Kbps.  Directly to the modem, it remains at 100.0Mbps, according to the 2 little boxes at the bottom right corner.  In the Network Connections Window, I have a LAN Connection and an Internet Gateway.  When both of those windows are up observing status, the LAN is at 100.0Mbps, and the Internet Gateway is at the variable speeds.  I even reinstalled everything on the computer this morning and still get the same.  I even exchanged routers about 20 minutes ago and still nothing, so currently I am running direct to the high speed modem in order to research more info on this.  I even called D-Link twice and the second guy was useless, but the first guy, he never heard of such a thing and it should remain at a consistent speed.  I am on DSL.  As for these tests, I have done it before but running directly.  Everything seems to be ok there.  And I also found out something about Spyware.....well, I ran a program lastnight for that and still to no avail.

What about drivers for the adapter card?  Can they be changed?

As for the other computer, I think the computer is fine, regarding speed.

I bought the router 2 months ago and it seems to work ok going on the internet, but I didn't find it fast enough.  Now both of us can't get on the internet when the sp[eeds are that low.

What is the Internet Gateway?  Whether you connect directly to router or to the dsl modem, you should be using the same network adapter.  If your dsl service requires PPPoE, then let the router perform this function for instead of using any software that came with the dsl modem.  If both computers slow down when connected to the router and if both run at full speed when connected directly to the modem and if you have replaced the router, then it must be something with the way you have configured both of the routers you have tried.

Hi Steve.  Ok, Internet Gateway, maybe just a name, is on when my Local Area Connection is enabled.  Its all unde the Control Panel and under Network Connections.

As for the DSL modem, I haven't used any of the software because Windows XP has it built in.

As for the configuration, where do I start again?  I've been up and down and read some info on the internet.  My mind is boggled.  I think I am just going in circles, so is there a fresh start?

Since I don't have dsl and don't have a D-link router, all I can suggest is that when you connect through the router, to have the router provide the PPPoE service and disable the PPPoE service provided by Windows XP.  You don't want both trying to make the dsl connection and the Windows XP service will not likely run through the router.

Hey there Steve, I got it all worked out.  I formatted and completed wiped out the whole system and redid it all and now the router is working perfectly....things I haven't seen come up before, so obviously, at one time, the registry must have been tampered with or something.  Thank you very much for your support and emails.  Guess if i have a problem again, I will wipe it out again.

    Take care Steve,
