I am using a Dimension 4500S with Windows XP. I use AOL and had been using AOL broadband for 2 years without problems. Recently, each time I try to connect, it fails saying DNS server unreachable. It seems to fail at step one when trying to connect via TCP/IP. I have contacted AOL support several times and they have been unable to fix problem - the modem and software are working correctly. I was advised that there is a problem with my TCP/IP networking files. Can anyone suggest how I can resolve this? Many thanks
Thanks. I have tried both of these as suggested but to no avail. Still having the same problem. Any other ideas? I'm at the end of my tether as AOL will give me no further help. Thanks
To help troubleshoot this problem, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.
Do you connect using ethernet or USB? Neither seem to be working, but did you post the complete output? If you connect by USB, have you tried reinstalling the software for the modem (software is not necessary for an ethernet connection, but is for the USB connection)?
Excuse my ignorance but I'm not sure... I use a BT voyager 105 modem. Problem with the last post is probably that I had to disconnect it so that I could use my laptop to get on this site. Once connected it reads as follows:
Windows IP Configuration
Host Name: DGSN4J0J
Primary DNS Suffix :
Node Type: Hybrid
IP Routing Enabled: Yes
WINS Proxy Enabled: No
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection
connection specific DNS Suffix:
Description: GlobeSpan USB ADSL Lan Modem
Physical Ad: 00096F36079
Dhcp enabled: yes
Autoconfiguration yes
IP address: 0.0.0.0
Subnet mask: 0.0.0.0
Default gateway:
Dhcp server: 255.255.255.255
I have also tried re-installing the modem software...
When you connect with the laptop, do you connect with USB or ethernet? (USB has a flat rectangular plug, an ethernet plug looks like a telephone cable only about twice as wide).

See if the following helps:
Go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /flushdns then hit the enter key.
You might also want to try downloading and running winsockfix for Windows XP from the Here
