I have a Inspiron 600m that experiences difficulty getting to the internet via wireless network. It sometimes works and sometimes does not. I have looked at some of the threads posted here with similar issues and am frustrated because now when I try to do the Start, Run command of ipconfig /all the little black screen opens briefly and then disappears before I can read any of what it says. I am able to connect to my netgear wireless router and it says that I have an excellent connection at 11.0 Mbps, but I cannot access the internet. Other times I have been able to access the internet, but only for brief periods of time.
You are not following all of the instructions for running ipconfig. You have to first open a command promopt window by going to Start > Run and typing cmd, followed by clicking OK. Then, once the command prompt window opens, you type ipconfig /all in the command prompt window then hit the Enter key. The window will stay open so you can view the result.

Thanks Steve. That did help. But now that I have the information I am not sure what to do with it. What I see is that I am getting the same info on my laptop connected wirelessly as I am with my desktop which is connected by cable to the wireless router. One thing I am not sure of is that under media state on my laptop it say media disconnected. Should it?
Now I am thinking that maybe this is an issue of power and the fact that the internal network card gets shut off when I am unplugged. I just plugged the laptop into a power supply and presto got the message about internal network card being activated and then the internet came up. What do I do about this internal network card when I am unplugged?
Open Device Manager, expand the listing for Network Adapters, double click on the wireless adapter, then click on the Power Management tab in the properties box that comes up.. Different brands of network adapters have different options, but you should select an option to either always provide maximum power or to disable power management on the adapter.
