Last July I had to reinstall XP Home from CD-ROM thanks to a hard drive crash. Since then I've noticed changes. One has been odd behavior with MS Flightsim2004. Another has been an inability to establish a network with a WIN 98 SE machine.
I have a Dimension 8300 with a 3 GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM, and (now) a total of 200 GB of hard drive space. My older system is a Dimension XPS-R450 upgraded to an 850 MHz P3 processor with 256 MB of RAM, running WIN98 SE.
Until last July the 2 systems were quite happy to share information. After the crash, the 8300 has full access to the R450 but the vice is definitely not versa. I've sought answers on this board as well as others but nobody can tell me what the problem is.
I'm so disgusted by the problem that I've decided to purchase my next computer from a vendor OTHER than Dell, and will probably switch to another operating system as well.
FWIW --- I'm NOT a newbie. I've owned PC-style computers since 1993, others before that, and been online since the early 1980s. I realize that my new hostility toward Dell will not win me any advocates on this board but I hope that there are enough of us who demand quality that someone of a similar mind will respond.
I always have a hard time understanding why it is the computer's fault or the manufacturer's fault when it is the user that is the one making changes to the system. Anyway, on any computer running Windows XP with SP1, disable the Windows XP firewall. It will not allow File and Printer Sharing. On computers running Windows XP with SP2, make sure that the Windows XP firewall has File and Printer Sharing checked off on the Exceptions tab. If you are running any third party firewalls, like those provided by such programs as Zone Alarm, Norton Internet Security, or McAfee Security Suite, make sure they are configured to allow local network traffic.
You put up so many issues, how about let's deal with one, the file sharing. The only thing that can block File Sharing from the 98 Machine to the XP machine is a firewall and permissions.
Do you have File & Print Sharing turned on? Which folder are you trying to share? Is there a third party firewall involved, if so which one? Which flavor of XP is this?
