XP Network - cannot assign an IP address

Network of 10 computers - peer to peer connected through SMC EZ Switch - cat 5e cable-
8 of the 10 are working correctly-
Problems with 2 Dimensions computers - 1 xp pro and 1 xp home - both have service pack 2 and Norton security.
Network says Limited or no connectivity-
When I run the FIX it says 'cannot assign an IP address'
If I insert it manualy it seems to connect for a second or two and then stop.
Test with PING etc suggest Network is Ok as it is with other computers.

Any help please

How many XP Home machines on the LAN?  XP Home cn only see up to five machines, that the reason it was created, for small home networks.  Take the Home machines off the LAn and I'll bet your problems go away. Or at least, put them on another subnet.
