Optiplex 3070 Micro Processor Upgrade
Hi there!
I have an Optiplex 3070 micro form factor Chipset H370, socket (FC)LGA 1151 with an i5-9500T. I want to upgrade to an i9-9900T, but in the documentation for this PC (https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/optiplex-3070-desktop/opti3070_micro_setiup_specs/processor?guid=guid-72cc410a-de1d-44be-b12f-78ca48e7182a&lang=en-us) in Table 1 - 9th generation processors, the highest listed processor is the i7-9700T.
I was checking the H370 chipset documentation (https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/133284/intel-h370-chipset/compatible.html) and the i9-9900T is listed as a compatible product.
Everything seems to check out, I just want to make sure that I can make the upgrade before spending almost $400 in a new processor.
Anybody knows if there would be any upgrade issues?

Thank you very much! Very informative.
Figures companies would want to "nudge" you into buying pricier hardware altogether to get better components, such as a CPU.
I appreciate your suggestion to wait. I don't have the dough to get the processor now, but I think I've gotten enough encouragement to go ahead with this, that is, if in combination with having the money, I can find a seller that accepts returns in case it doesn't work. I'll be sure to post the results of the experiment if successful to possibly encourage others.

It works. [smiley] Don't forget to enable hyper-threading in firmware (if not already enabled) to get all 16 cores!

Finally got one (even though the cheapest was almost $700) and slapped it into my pc.

Nice. I got one for a bit less than that on one of the well known buy-and-sell sites, but they're not cheap! I'd recommend CineBench, GeekBench & Intel Power Gadget, if you haven't already got them. (You probably have!)

hello, where did you get your processor ? the 9900t? I can't seem to find it online. Also, do you know if the 9900k works for the Optiplex 3070 micro?
The only difference I see is that it runs on 95W instead of 35W.

Hello, I hope you can help me too.
read this whole thread and wanted to get the Intel Core i9-9900t but can't find it on-line. I found the i9-9900k and it is apparently very similar. Do you know if that will work in the Dell Optiplex 3070 micro? I can't see how to verify this.

Hey @amodk,
I don't believe you can use the 9900K on an Optiplex 3070 micro due to the high power requirements. I've seen 90W (not 95W) PSUs (such as this: https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/external-90w-psu-for-optiplex-micro-kit/apd/492-bckw/pc-accessories), but they are for other models such as the 5060 MFF+.

i9-9900T is compatible with 3070. Reason why it is not included in Dell spec is because 3000 series is entry level low tier model and Dell does not offer high tier cpu configuration. Dell has not validated i9 in this model (they would not bother testing it if it is not included in offer). The i9 was not offered in the mid tier 5070 either. 5070 and 7070 both have Q370 chipset. Dell wanted to reserve the best cpu (cream of the crop) for the top flagship model. In the high tier model 7070 Dell does offer the i9.
here are 7 user validated examples of i9-9900 in 3070. This is not the same cpu as i9-9900T and these are likely 3070 tower or SFF, not micro, but it does support the notion that high tier cpu is compatible with low tier Dell optiplex model, even though Dell has not validated it themselves.
Having said it, I cannot find user validated example of i9-9900T in 3070 yet. So it remains unproven. On the cautious side I would suggest wait until some one has validated before making your purchase.
