A client of ours has a PE1440SC with a BroadCom NetXtreme Gigabit adapter that started getting kicked off of the network. After installing the Broadcom Control Suite, we started collecting statistics and found that after copying several gigabyte-sized files, the "Frames Rx. with CRC Error" field was roughly 1/2 of the total frames transmitted and received.
Of 800k TX/RX packets, there were 390k CRC errors. I can't find much in the way of support on the Broadcom site about this field and it's relation to a failed adapter as all network tests come back "ok". On Broadcom Nic's should (as I would imagine it to be) this field be 0 (i.e no CRC failures) or will Broadcom Nics have high CRC counts and operate normally?
If the internal NIC is shot, can this machine easily have the internal nic disabled in BIOS and have a new NIC plugged in?
Have you ruled out speed/duplex mismatches between the NICs and the switch ports, have you recertified the cabling at the client, including the patch cords to the machines? Network interfaces very rarely go bad, 99.9% of the time it is something else.
We manually set the card to 1gb/sec through 10mb/sec, changed cables (after proofing with our cableIQ tester) and used a test switch. This one machine is now failing outright in that every 4-5 seconds windows believes the cable is disconnected. We've now disabled the NIC in the Bios and added in a new network card. This is the first onboard nic I've ever known to go bad on a Dell machine.
