Hello everyone, i have a PE2900 that i just recently purchase from a buddy and was thinking of upgrading the CPUs. I'm not sure what version of the PE2900 i have but probably the 1 generation. I'm currently running on 2 dual core intel xeon 5110 and by looking at the setup on the warranty page it listed that i have the J7551 Printed Wiring Assy, Planar Server, Dell Computer Corporation, PE2900, assuming that's the motherboard? Anyway what the highest Quad Core CPU model can i upgrade to? I know that only the 3rd generation support the 5400 cpu so if anyone have any idea what the max cpu i can go for as quad core i would really appreciated. Thanks.
WOW! that's surprising. I was hoping that i could at least put two quad core in this beast but i guess i'm wrong. With the two CPU i have now for a file data server with 20 user i should be good to go right?
A fileserver doesn't need much processing power. It needs a decent memory amount and a good (decent performing) raid controller. A single 5110 would probably even still do the job, so you should be fine.
The PE2900 Servers come in 3 generations as you know. I, II and III. Whoever posted the Dual Core 3,73's are the highest a gen I will take is correct. The gen II's will take quad cores up to 8m of cache and the Gen III quad cores up to 12M of cache. The J7551 is in fact a Gen 1 Board. If you are looking to upgrade your processors, buy a lot of Velocity Tech Solutions for my company and I know they have them.
