Embedded Server Mgmt errors on 2450

During routine refurbishing of one of our 2450 boxes, I ran the latest Dell diagnostics.

I'm getting these errors, and I'm not exactly sure what to replace!

I checked/cleaned all connections between motherboard and backplane.  Still getting errors.

Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hi,

Most of these are probably false error messages caused by old or mismatched firmware. I would recommend installing these versions:

    System BIOS, PowerEdge 2450, A09
    FileName: 2450-A09.exe [485 KB]     &nbspRelease Date: 12/16/2003

    ESM Firmware, A42
    Filename: a42cust.exe (397 KB)
Note: Extract the files to a DOS bootable floppy disk. Boot the server to this floppy disk, and run smflsh.exe.

    Adaptec PERC3/Si Firmware, PowerEdge 2450, v.2.8.0.6089, A12
    FileName: PE2450-280_6089.exe [1 MB]     &nbspRelease Date: 4/14/2004

Note: The Intrusion Detection error is simply the case is (or has been) open.

Thanks for using the Dell Community Forums!

Thanks much.    BIOS A09 already on box.

Any particular order I should update the ESM and PERC?

    Hi,

I would install the ESM Firmware first, but it really does not matter with those 2 files.

FYI, generally the System BIOS and ESM Firmware should be updated together. System BIOS first, except on the PowerEdge 4300 and 6300.

On a system with an Operating System installed, you always want to upgrade the Perc driver before the Perc Firmware.

    Thanks

    One more question --

I tried to update the PERC drivers in windows 2000 server using the 2.8 drivers on the dell site.

Although i can specify the new drivers from dell, windows will only use the drivers in the winnt/system32 directory.

is there a way to override this?

Do I need to override the windows drivers in order to flash the PERC?

    Hi,

Did you use this driver for the upgrade:

    Adaptec Perc 3/si Driver, Windows 2000, v.2.8.0.6085, A15
    FileName: W2K-2806085.exe [259 KB]     &nbspRelease Date: 4/14/2004

Yes, the driver MUST be updated before loading the new Perc Firmware. Failure to do so usually results in an Inaccessible Boot Device error at boot.

    Thanks

    Hi,

PS1 is power supply 1. If you have 2 power supplies, swap locations and see if the error follows the power supply or stays with the slot location.

If you only have one power supply, it is not really an error (probably), just an informational alert.

I would recommend loading the Dell OpenManage Server Administrator. It does a much better job of tracking and reporting these Embedded Server Management (ESM) errors than the diagnostics.

Dell OpenManage Server Administrator and Remote Install (Agent), 2000, 2003, v.1.8, A00
    FileName: om38_win_managed_systemA00.exe [194 MB]     &nbspRelease Date: 5/26/2004

    Oops.  My bad.

This box doesn't have a RAID key, so that's why I'm not able to upgrade drivers/flash. Duh.

Anyway, the ESM & backplane firmware update whittled my errors down to one.   THANKS!

BTW, what is the PS 1 Status sensor?

    Test Errors
Embedded Server Mgmt - ESM2 System Board Sensor Check      : Fail
      Status: Fail  Status Code: DOS DDG-D ESM2 030 036
      Device: Embedded_Server_Mgmt  Test: ESM2_System_Board_Sensor_Check
      Release: 1023 Module(s): Esm2
Msg: An important event was detected in the ESM log. Critical error on entry
57 of 127.  SMB event was reported for PS 1 Status  sensor with a value of
    FF13h.

    Hi Dave,

No, the Server Administrator is a software package which runs inside the Operating System. The bootable CD which installs the Utility Partition is called the Dell OpenManage Server Assistant CD (DOSA).

The DOSA is not downloadable due to licensing issues with Microsoft, but there is one shipped with every machine and many are interchangeable.

If you don not have any, the latest revision of the OpenManage Applications CD set is part number 310-0399. Dell spare parts can be reached by phone at 1-800-357-3355.

    Thanks

The ones I have handy are for a 2300 and a 1655.  The others are in the datacenter.  I'll dig one up.

    Thanks.
