Reboot Disk0 in Foreign State

My R630 won't boot on restart because VDisk0 has Foreign state. It's Raid-1 w/ 2- SAS HDDs. Status of both are "Non-Critical"

I can "clear" the state and "import" the foreign raid configuration and the system boots fine. However next time the server restarts it the same situation.

the other VD is working fine, it's Raid-10 w/ 4-SATA SSDs

Can anyone help me fix this?

    Hello reedprinting,

That is strange that the array goes foreign on each reboot. Initially my thought is the firmware needs to be updated to fix any communication/timing issues that may be causing the array to go foreign.

Another thing to check; Does either of those drives show Failure Predicted=Yes?

Review the LifeCycle log or the PERC controller log for any issues with the array.

I may also recommend run a consistency check on the virtual disk.

Make sure you have a good backup and update storage chain -  drivers and firmware.

PERC controller firmware and driver, backplane firmware, hard drive firmware

If you would like to pull the hardware log for me to review follow these steps:

Export a SupportAssist Collection via iDRAC7 and iDRAC8

Upload here under your Service Tag and Private Message me your service tag number and operating system.

    Please let me know.

    Hello reedprinting,

Thank you for the message with the service tag. I'll watch for the log to be available for me to download.

If possible  Export Support Assist Collection and RAID Controller Log through PowerEdge Lifecycle Controller and upload too.  Link directions : https://dell.to/3hCZQdH

    Hello reedprinting,

I think I have enough information with the logs you have provided already.

The Non-Critical status is only indicating that the drives are Non-Dell drives.  This could be the root cause of the array failing. Sometimes third party hard drives do not communicate thoroughly with the firmware on our controllers. We can see the communication issue in the LSI log and Alert log.

    LSI log:

    09/02/20  2:11:43:  87=Error on PD 00(e0x20/s0) (Error 02)

    09/02/20  2:11:43: 114=State change on PD 00(e0x20/s0) from ONLINE(18) to FAILED(11)

    09/02/20  2:11:44:  87=Error on PD 01(e0x20/s1) (Error 02)

    09/02/20  2:11:44: 114=State change on PD 01(e0x20/s1) from ONLINE(18) to FAILED(11)

    09/02/20  2:11:44:  81=State change on VD 00/1 from DEGRADED(2) to OFFLINE(0)

Sense key: 5 Sense code: 24 Sense qualifier: 0

    Sense key wiki : https://dell.to/32Hn6mN

Illegal Request - invalid field in CDB (Command Descriptor Block)

I'd recommend contact the manufacturer to see if they have a firmware update for drive 0:1:0 and 0:1:1.

    Additionally update the controller firmware:

    H330 mini  firmware=25.5.5 update to  25.5.7, driver=6.604.06.00 (is current)

    Firmware 25.5.7 link : https://dell.to/3hzBuBG

Please let me know how it goes.

I am thinking the safest thing to do is swap out drive 0:1:0 and 0:1:1 with new Dell units.

Can you tell me how to make sure I get real Dell drives?

You currently have 300G drives so this one should work:

    Part#4GN49 - Hard Drive HD,300G,SAS6,15,2.5,T-13SX,E/C

Sorry, got impatient and bought this:

    Dell - 300GB 15K SAS 6Gb/s 2.5" HD - Mfg# 0H8DVC

Will it be okay? Thanks a lot you are really helping way beyond my expectations.
