715N Reinstallation Issues

I'm trying to reinstall a PV715N using the dedicated windows 2000 system method. All goes well until it reminds me that all data will be DELETED, and I confirm my intentions (twice) it then says:
"
System motherboard not compatible with reinstallation.
Software installation aborted!

Rebooting NAS System"
Is there no way to reinstall?

There are 2 different version of the PV715.  There is the 1.0, which you have and you are trying to install with the 1.1 version of the CD.  Please use the appropriate CD.

I have experienced a similar issue (with reinstallation stopping at the same point)... The configuration of our 715N was changed, from 240GB to 160 GB, so the disk images on the reinstallation CD's were the wrong size. If you didn't purchase the device from Dell directly, call Dell support to make sure that that you have the right disks. If you don't, good luck getting Dell to give them to you. If you have revision 1.0 cds for a 160 GB 715N, please let me know as I am in great need of them.

If you have Version 1.1 hardware, there will be a sticker on the back near the serial port.

just by the error message you stated tells me you have a 1.0 machine and the 1.1 CDs.  I dont remember what is written on the cds off the top of my head.

I know the images are not on any website, since there is a copyright agreement with Microsoft.  If you lost them, I am sure you can get some new ones from Dell, if you purchased the system from Dell.  If you bought it from a third party, well, not sure if you have any options for a NAS system.

So the size of the drives in the 715 doesn't affect whether or not a particular cd will work with it? I have the following Reinstallation CDs:
    P/N 4J012 Rev. A00 (september 2001)
    P/N 6P545 Rev. A00 (march 2002)
and have tried them each. Does the version of the Resource CD (and hence the installed version of OpenManage Kickstart and the Intel PXE server) matter?

    Thanks

Did this ever get a resolution ?

I have a brand new 715N, fresh out of it's box on Monday, plugged in, powered up, assigned IP, working away ...

Setup a few users, quotas, shares, noticed it happily let the quotas be exceeded.

On investigation - it in fact didnt seem to take any notice of the quotas set, and afetr saving and a reboot the info was gone.

So decided i'd better patch it up before putting to real use, shut it down. moved it.

On firing up the 4th disk orange light *never* goes out - 18 hours, stil light on, still no server up & running - so I power down, remove teh drive, fires up fine .. a fault drive - i'll put in a replacement. Do that  - never syncs/raid write the disk. Never comes back up, Terminal services client immediately you login says saving settings and quits.

    So i think i'll do a reinstall ... 2 days later ...

problem 1 - the reinstallation floppy is missing some files (oakcdrom, netmsg etc for example) - fixable but annoying

problme 2 - the reinstallation never happens , it *NEVER* finds the machine on the n/work , and console cable to share the cd drive. - this drive is visible from all other machines. Tried putting the win2k reinstall unit to the same w/group , put lots of pauses and rems in the autoexec to see whats wrong, but the 715 *cannot* see any of the shared drives on any of the machione son the network , even after putting them in same w/group and subnet etc.

So, *surely* someone out there has actually successfully done a restore - they obviously dont use the cds that come with it due to the missing files - so i'm stuck , short of slinging it in the river and claiming on the insurance some advice much appreciated

The PV715 comes with 2 network cards connectors.  Have you tried the other one?

The basic disk is created and it really doesnt know what CD rom drive you have, so it loads multiple, you can always rem it out before uploading it to the pxie server.

    Hope this helps

    tried both, no joy :(

the "floppy image" having *multiple* cdrivers wouldnt be a problem - the fact it requires one in the config sys and doesnt  include *any* was the bug - now fixed

machine gets allocated the righ ip 10.40.10.2 from the KickStart so it's ok at that point, its the mapping of a drive, and of course with no net.msg etc, not possible to get "help" from the d:\net\net exe to find out what other commands i can use

config'ing another machine to be 10.40.10.5 and that machine can map a drive to \\pv715rec\cd no problem - so it's *definately* something to do with the dell/reinsta/bootfloppy

Nics s/be ok as i coudl connect with TS before starting thereinstall

Anyone who's *actually* managed a restoire on one of these got some caveats / how-to's ? the 725 unit works like a charm, this one just never got unpacked - shame as its a couple of months out of 12mth return ...

After struggling with it for months I finally sent it back to Dell. A week later they sent it back and it worked no prob. Given my inability to talk with anyone at Dell who could diagnose the problem I'd recommend sending it back.
