MD1000 PERC 5/E unified or split for best performance

We have a PERC 5/E and MD1000 with 15 drives. Is there a performance advantage to run in split mode with two connectors and have one raid5 on each side or run in unified mode with one connector and still have two raid5 groups? Thanks

SAS/SATA doesn't share bandwidth for drives, so each drive has it's own dedicated bandwidth. Therefor there's no performance difference when splitting to 2 channels (unless you were maybe using 2 PERC cards as each card's processor would only have to do half the work (not sure if this is supported with a single server though)).

I was thinking that because each port supports 4 SAS lanes for a total bandwidth per port of 12.0 Gbps that two ports would have a higher higher performance (8 lanes @ 24 Gbps).

The support matrix is listed here.  Having a single server with 2 PERCs connected to a single MD1000 in split mode is shown as supported on page 7.

    ccrowder,
I have seen an increase in performance when I connected the MD1000 in split mode to a single PERC5/e (one side to each port). Since each port on the PERC5/e contains 4 SAS phys you can double the phys by using both ports. Although this setup did give higher throughput when testing with IOMETER, do not expect twice the performance as before.

Also, If you were to add a second MD1000 to the solution I would recommend having one off of each port of the PERC5/e rather then both on one port daisy chained. This would ensure you are using all available phys from the PERC5/e.
