I have a doubt about how to configure my MD3000 to work with a MySQL server. I am thinking in two possible configurations, but I am not sure what would be the best.
My first option is the following:
One Raid 1 Disk Group (2 x 450 GB HDs) with the corresponding Virtual Disk for the Databases.
One Raid 1 Disk Group (2 x 450 GB HDs) with the corresponding Virtual Disk for the Logs.
One Raid 5 Disk Group (3 x 450 GB HDs) with the corresponding Virtual Disk for Backups.
One disk (450 GB) as Spare.
The other option is to create a large Raid 5 with 7 drives and left the other as spare. Then I could create different Virtual Disks for databases, logs and backups. With this option I get more space and I think is more flexible, but I guess that it is lees good in terms of performance.

I have been reading the "PowerVault MD3000 and MD3000i Array Tuning Best Practices" and in matter of Performance seems that the answer is: Isolated Disk Groups with a minimum number of Virtual Disk (Only one ideally). That was my first option but now I have to decide if we can sacrifice some performance in order to have more space. The eternal doubt :)
I will try to benchmark the two options if I have enough time.
On our MD3000i's? By far the best performance was the have as many spindles as possible in one disk group and then create Virtual disks within the group. MD3000 is DAS though right? I'm not sure testing would prove that out oin DAS. But... We run our entire SQL VM's in one dedicated lun. (Vmware virtualized) This allows us greater flexibility with redundancy. snapshotting and disk copying.
Our question these days? Is which is faster? A raid 6 with all the drives or a raid 5 with a hot spare. I am testing this out this very week.
Just keep in mind your spindle count is still of the most critical in matters concerning speed. Our mail server can't even start the information store on boot with less than like 8 spindles in a disk group. Raid 10 effectively cuts yoru spindle count in 1/2 as far as speed goes.

"Virtual disks are aligned in series within a Disk Group with the first virtual
disk starting in the fastest outer regions and progressing inwards. When taking
this into account, a disk group should be designed with as few virtual disks as
possible.
Dell™ does not recommend using more than four virtual disks or repositories per
disk group for peak performance. Additionally, where performance is critical,
isolate virtual disks to separate disk groups as possible.
When multiple high-traffic virtual disks share a disk group, even with purely sequential usage models,
the disk group I/O behavior becomes increasingly random, lowering overall
performance. Additionally, when a disk group must be shared, the most heavily
trafficked virtual disk always should be located at the beginning of a disk group."
