I have a Dell 3115cn Color laser printer and I'm having problems setting up the e-mail alert settings. Here's the thing I get e-mail alerts and I get scan images sent to my e-mail but I cannot send scanned images from the printer to lets say a Yahoo or gmail account etc. All e-mail alerts and scan images I send I can get is sent to local e-mail addresses on my mail server but any external e-mail address it doesn't work.
Sorry I can't your question, but I do have a question for you regarding the 3115cn.
I'm trying to find out whether the 3115cn is capable of fax > email. I've asked our Dell account manager, and she doesn't know, and I've asked on this forum, but not had any answer from Dell tech support. I was hoping another forum member who already has a 3115cn, such as yourself, might be able to tell me. I know it has scan > email, and fax capability, but no where in the online manuals does it mention fax > email. If you could let me know I would be forever grateful.
I had to repost this thread because Dell support took it down because I used anin-appropriate word. Here's the new edit listing.
bjblackmore I'm not sure I understand your question. I'll take a guess here. You want to know if you can fax to an e-mail address? If that is your question then I would say no. I don't see or know of anywhere that it would let you type or enter in an e-mail address other then a phone number.
On the other hand you can send faxes from your computer to thw 3115cn. I have my printer connected to my network via the ethernet port and I have all my office computers hooked to it. We can open up a word document etc. and fax it straight from our computer.
You can also scan a picture, document etc. and have it e-mailed to you as well. Let me know if this answers your question. By the day Dell Manual is not good at all. I found options online that can't find in the manual
Thanks for taking the time to re-post your reply, I did see that Dell took the original post down, wasn't sure why.
What I would like to know is, can the printer re-direct incoming faxes to an email address? Like the 1815dn which says "Plus, its network fax capability includes auto-forwarding to an e-mail address."
This is useful in the event that a fax receives hundreds of faxes, rather than wasting paper printing each one out, it can redirect that fax as a jpg or pdf to an email address. As you said, the 3115cn can scan a picture/document and have it emailed to you, so I can't see any reason, in theory, why it couldn't do the same with an incomming fax, however it doesn't say its capable of this in the online spec or manual.
I know you can forward faxes to another telephone number but I don't see anywhere to enter an an e-mail address to forward faxes too. I downloaded the 1815dn manual because you posted the link to this printer that says you can forward faxes to an e-mail address etc. I could not find anything in that manual telling you have or where to set this forwarding up to an e-mail address.
If you can find me steps on setting that up even if the steps are for the 1815dn, I just need some direction on doing this then I can test it on my 3115cn if posible. As of now I don't see how or where I it would forward faxes to an e-mail address.
You have to: "go into the menu for "Email Setup" and click on "SMTP Server Settings". type in the IP address, click authentication and fill everything out."
I hope this is enough information, I'm trying to find out some more details, but all I have to go on, are peoples posts on this forum that referance "1815dn" & "fax". It could also be under "Email Alerts", another post mentions this menu, so maybe you have to setup an email alert for faxes!? I'll try looking for more manuals/guides.
bjblackmore i went through each page and nowhere I can find how to forward faxes to an e-mail account. All they talked about is getting the e-mail setup working. I have my e-mail notification setup and working the only problem I have and the reason why I started this thread is because I can't scan an image and have it sent to an external e-mail address like Yahoo, gmail or hotmail account. I get my notification, alerts, and can scan images and send them to my e-mail address which is onour mail server without any issues.
Again I don't see anywhere in the setting about forwarding a fax to an e-mail address. I don't see anything in my 3115cn manual or the in the manual for the 1815dn printer about forwarding faxes to an e-mail address. Matter of fact the manual really don't even tell you have to setup the e-mail notification it just tells you that you can have notificatin sent to your e-mail address and where the settings are.
The 3115cn doesn't clearly say you canforward faxes to your e-mail address like how the 1815dn clearly states but neither one's manual tells you have to do it. Dell have some realyl really terrible instructions, I guess they want you to have to call the Dell support, which I'm not paying for. It boggles my mind why they would say something can be done and not tell you how to do it in the manual.
Thanks again for the reply, and taking the time to look. I guess I'll drop the 3115cn and go for a 1815dn, although I was hoping for a colour printer. I agree with you on the Dell Manual issue, even the 1815dn manual doesn't mention fax > email setup/config, its really quite awful.
I can try and give some advice on your problem if you like? I've read a few posts concerning th 3115cn and emailing while trying to find an answer to my question.
Do you have an internal SMTP server? I guess the answer is yet if you are receving internal emails OK. So I'm assuming your setup is: 3115cn has internal smtp server setup in the config, does it use authentication, or is the smtp server setup just to accept connections from anything on the same subnet and not to require authentication. Is the smtp server setup to allow relaying of messages? What smtp server are you using? I've configured IIS6 & Exchange (based on IIS6) a fair few times, if its either of those 2 I can post screen shots or give advice on the config. Have you tried running a network sniffer (like ethereal/wireshark) when the 3115cn sends a message externally? You might be able to see why its failing, or at least see if the message + attachment is being sent to the smtp server.
I'll try and think some more, sounds like a message routing issue, but I could be wrong.
I do not have an internal mail server. We lease a server from GoDaddy that we use for all e-mails so that is in external e-mail server. I can send a scan image via e-mail from my 3115cn Laser printer to any domain on that server but not to any external domains or e-mails accounts that's not on the server.
The server does require smtp authentication and it is not setup for relaying. We'll be having spam sent through if we did. I'm running Windows Server 2003 Standard Edtion on the mail server and I'm not using exchange. I'm using SmarterMail.
I looked at etherreal before but never used it. I'm really not that familiar with it but I did experiment with it in the past.
