A960 Error Message 502

While searching for the solution to my problem, I realized many are facing the same so I wanted to share the solution I found. (it was a link to Dell on one of the messages).
This has worked so far--we will see how long it lasts.
It seems that the error message 502 appearing has something to do with the encoding strip (clear plastic strip) behind the ink cartridge.  It is supposed to fit into a small slot behind the cartridge and when it is not in position, the message appears.
I can't remember the exact link, but it says to unplug the power supply from your printer.
Manually move the cartridge carrier to the center.
Use your index finger to first push down then up on the encoding strip to jossle it into place.
Manually move the cartridge carrier left and right to be sure the strip is attached in the back.
Close printer and plug in power supply.  If encoding strip is in properly, error message should not appear.
I hope this helps.  Don't know why I couldn't find this on Dell's page before I spend 3hrs on hold with no help.

Thats not the only thing that will cause that error you some times also have to remove your ink cartridges and clean the gold copper strip on the cartridges and inside the printer. Also you sometimes are required to take a paper towel and lightly pinch the encoder strip and run your ringer with the paper towel right to left over it to clean it as well as running a paper towel over the medal bar once or twice to clean that as well.

All the built up ink over time can cause this problem to occur

PS. Sometimes you are required to clean the encoder strip and inside the ink carriage 3-4 times before the issue is resolved.

    Hope this helps as well

This proceeder works for all Dell printer models that get the 0502 error

Thanks for the tips.  I definately will keep them all on hand.  Hopefully (but doubtfully) I will never have to use them.

Tried these steps with a Dell tech......had no luck.  I'll try again.  I really like my printer and would like to be a satisfied Dell customer.  I am so frustrated because the only solution the Tech came up with was an exchange and our warranty is up.

It seems whenever I contacted Dell, they were really no help because my warranty  had expired as well.
I do not know if you can purchase a new encoding strip.  If I ever get the hardware error 502 message, I just do the steps previously listed and it is good to go for a good while.

Why did the Dell Tech not tell me about cleaning the encoder strip and ink cart(s)?  It can't be that difficult to do.  Do you know if you can get a new encode strip if need be?

This REALLY WORKED for us with our A940.

We were about to junk ours, found this thread, and now its been over a month without a single error.
