Please help...we have an all in one 964 printer just purchased in July, '06. I just changed the original black cartridge that came with the printer. I correctly installed a new black printer cartridge purchased from Dell when I bought the printer. I immediately got a message that the "black cartridge is missing". I've been through all the Dell Support stuff on line and it seems I'm not the only one to have this problem. I even replaced the color cartridge even though the other one was not yet empty. I do not receive any message regarding the color cartridge - just the black one.
I clearly have a new FULL cartridge in. It's in the right slot, I've unplugged and replugged in the printer, it's a Dell cartridge, etc. etc. and it's not working. I've worked in an office for 25 years and know how to replace cartridges.
Wipe the electrical contacts on the back of the black ink cart with a clean cloth. If that doesn't help then put your old black ink cart back in and see if the "missing" message goes away. If it does then your new black ink cart is bad and will be replaced by Dell.
Thank you. I wiped the contacts with a clean, lint-free cloth and reinserted the new cartridge. Same 'black cartridge missing' message. So I reinserted the old black cartridge, and the message indeed disappeared. Looks like I do have a bad new cartridge. I'm just curious, though - what would make a cartridge not even be recognized in the printer? Perhaps the contacts are misaligned?
Thanks for your assistance - I'll be in touch with Dell for a replacement.
Reset the printer registers to null by: turn off printer, unplug ac and USB cords from back of printer for one minute. Replug and retry. Also lightly clean the electrical contacts inside of the ink cart carrier. As a last resort reinstall printer driver from disc or download from Dell.
Thank you, 'william_the_scot". Your suggestions were most helpful, and through your advice I was able to determine that it was indeed a cartridge problem and not a printer problem. Even though we're still under warranty, it's much easier to deal with a cartridge to return than the entire printer!
I'm also pleased to say that Dell was immediately reactive and overnighted me a new black cartridge - it works and life is good! :smileyhappy:
