Dell 5100cn Printer

We are considering purchasing a Dell 5100cn Printer.  I'd like to hear from current users.  How do you like it...would you purchase one again and if not, is there a better one from Dell???

We have a 5100cn since July 2005.  The cost of the toner is high, making the cost of copies approx $0.16 ech, including repalcing the imaging drum.  Copies are good.  However, our printer has developed a repetative paper jam problem, and it is IMPOSSIBLE, I repeat IMPOSSIBLE to get it repaired.  I spent over an hour on the phone trying to arrange service and got tranferred at least 12 times, had to hang up and redial 4 times, and never got an answer.

I suggest never buy a printer of this cost from DEll.  Instead buy from a local compnay who can provide support.

    Hi There...

I currently have 2 of them in the office. Both work very well for our needs. While I aggree with the above post on the cost of OE toner, but if you compair it to the Xerox/Fuji cousin. Its almost half of what Xerox wants for the same cartridge. So in that respect it is a bit better. Ourselfs' we refill ours for around $169 for the colors(3 carts). that is about 2/3rds cheaper. The Black is tough to beat the price on. On my last order, it was around $45 per cartridg  for the black in a 4 pak.

All in all, if I had to do it again.. I'd would. it's a great cheap office color laser with good speed..

    Hi

I have a new Dell 5100cn printer and have a one other dell printer. Both of them I have had no problems with. However I seem to be having a problem getting my new 5100cn to work on my network. Can anyone provide advise on IP address do I use the one for my other printer or does the 5200cn come with its own installed address.

I have installed it 4 times - gone through the procedures and still it won't print. It appears as printing in the bottom browser bar.

More than likley your have a problem using DHCP to assign the address. Go into the frt panel to network settings and set the IP static within the scope of the network.. If you need help, it's in the poorly writen manual but a bit tough to find. Or if you need more as soon as i get back I write down the steps for you.(Heading out with the wife)

    Hi Again

Now that I'm back home and my wife spent all my money...........:smileymad:

Anyway, here's what you do..... I'm going to go show you 2 ways. First way is thru the FRT PANEL of the printer. The second will be using the WEB INTERFACE.

    FRT PANEL Version......

    1.  Find the ip of you computer or computers.
One way to find this is to click on START then RUN. in the Run dialog type in CMD and then click on OK. A black DOS box should appear. Type in IPCONFIG and the press enter. You computer IP address will appear in something that looks like this...
Mine reported back as 10.0.0.50. Yours more than likely will be something different. Now we know that the IP range of my network is 10.0.0.1 thru 10.0.0.255. Also by looking at the above screen i know that IP's 10.0.0.1 , 10.0.0.2 , 10.0.0.3 , 10.0.0.4 , 10.0.0.5 , and 10.0.0.50 are taken. Also take note of the  SUBNET MASK and the GATEWAY numbers.

So at this time you need to pick a IP somewhere that you think may not be used. For all of my printers i picked a block of ip's from 10.0.0.10 thru 10.0.0.20.  The ip for my 5100cn I choose was 10.0.0.17.
Your choice is up to you, what you see above is what i have set up. Yours will more than likely be different...

    2. Now that you have a ip in mind(I'm going to use mine so sub in you numbers) Go to you printers panel and press the MENU button.
    3. Configure should be displayed. Press the RIGHT arrow button.
    4. Now press the DOWN arrow button until NETWORK is displayed
    5. Press the RIGHT Arrow. ETHERNET should be displayed
    6. Press the DOWN arrow until TCPIP is displayed
    7. Press the RIGHT arrow. IP ADDRESSSETUP should be displayed.
    8. Press the RIGHT arrow.
    9. Press the UP and DOWN arrows until PANEL is DIsplayed
    10. Press the enter key. It should now have a star beside the word PANEL now. This just took it out of DHCP mode.
11 Now press the LEFT arrow once. IP ADDRESSSETUP should now be displayed.
    12. Press DOWN arrow until IP ADDRESS is displayed.
    13. Press RIGHT arrow. Now your address is displayed. Use the RIGHT, LEFT, UP, DOWN arrows to change the numbers.
    14. After setting the ip number to what you want(mine is 010.000.000.017) press the ENTER button and a star should appear to the right.
    15. Now LEFT arrow back to IP ADDRESS.
    16. Press the DOWN arrow to SUBNET MASK.
    17. Press the RIGHT arrow when SUBNET MASK appears. Now enter the SUBNET MASK numbers that you got in step one
18 Press the enter button and a star should appear to the right of the numbers entered.
19 Press the RIGHT arrow and SUBNET MASK should appear again.
20 Press the DOWN arrow to GATEWAY ADDRESS appears
    21. Press the RIGHT arrow  and input the GATEWAY Numbers that you got in step 1.
    22. Now press the enter button. A star should appear beside the address you entered.
    23. Now press the MENU button. You should be back to the main screen on the Panel. You need to restart the printer for the settings to take affect.

Now if you want, you can go thru the panel menus to verify the settings. They should be as you set them.

    WEB INTERFACE Version

    1. Use the FRT PANEL to find the IP of your printer.
    2. Open a WEB BROWSER. Type in you printers ip address (for me, mine is http://10.0.0.17)
    This page should appear:

Now click on PRINT SERVER SETTINGS(1) then TCPIP(2)
Next enter your numbers. Everything should look like the picture below except you numbers will be different than mine.

If you got all the settings and numbers in. Scroll to the bottom and press the button RESTART PRINTER TO SAVE NEW SETTINGS

That should do it... Sorry it's a bit long

    Hi Ray,

This is excellent and thank you for taking the time to copy all of the screen dumps into your reply. This has got to be one of the best forum replys that I have had and it is very much appreciated.

    A very happy forum member.

This is something I can only do if the computer is connected to a network, right? I'd love to have access to the Printer Configuration Web Tool, but my printer is connected via USB, not a network.

Is there any way to use the Printer Configuration Web Tool (or something as comprehensive) with just a USB connection?

    Thanks,
