This concerns 3 PC's two of which are desktops and are located in different states. These two desktops (both XP Home SP3) each have HP 960c printers of their own which work fine. Now I have a 3rd PC a laptop with XP Pro SP3 that I want to use with each of these two printers (same make, model number, but different serial numbers).
Can I do this with only installing one set of printer drivers or do I need to do something else?
It depends on what you are looking to achieve. Are you trying to be able to print to both printers from the laptop while at either location? Or... are you only looking to connect to one printer at a time, when the laptop is physically present at the same location as the printer?
If you're using a USB connection, and just plugging in one printer or the other depending upon location, then one driver/printer installation should suffice.
If you are using a network setup for printing but have two independent Local Area Networks behind a NAT box at each location that don't have to talk to each other... you could manipulate your settings to allow one printer setup to work at both locations. - Give the printer at each location the same IP address, (e.g. 192.168.1.5) and then your printer will be found regardless of which network you're connected to. (Note: If both networks are not already using the same IP addressing scheme, then this can mean a lot more work than it's worth)
FYI, installing multiple instances of the same printer doesn't actaully install the driver twice. Windows will use the same driver for each. For example, I have multiple instances of my color laser printer installed, one that is setup to print B&W only to save the more expensive color toner, and one that uses the drivers default settings to print color.
