1000-0146 error code

I think this error code may be familiar to all those looking on this part of the forum. After running diagnostcs I got this code and from reading other posts its a hrddrive problem. Now I don't want to be accused of jumping the gun here but I guess I will be told by Dell I need a new hard drive! Can I save data (mainly stuff in My Documents) from my HD, even though it wont boot in safe mode? My daughter is very upset cos she forgot to backup her course work!

You do need a new hard drive.

Purchase an external USB hard drive case (depending on the model, you'll need SATA or EIDE) and mount the failed drive in it. Install the replacement drive in the system, rebuild the OS, and connect the failed drive and read what you can.

Then purchase another 2.5" drive, mount it in the external case, and back up regularly.

You may be able to save ome or all of the data on the drive, depending on how far gone it is.

The same thing recently happened to me and I had to install a new HDD.  Before purchasing anything new,try inserting your XP CD, hitting F12 (or F8) at the Dell screen, and booting from the CD ROM.
