I have a new Dimension 9150 with one SATA II 500GB hard drive and I was interested in exploring the idea of getting another and converting to a RAID 0 array. Is this possible? Do I need an add-in card? If I wasn't clear, RAID is not part of the original system specifications.
The system has onboard RAID 0 and 1. Be sure you understand the very real downside of RAID 0 - it doubles your chance of losing everything, since if either drive fails, you lose it all.
You would be wise to factor in a copy of RAID-supportive imaging software and a good external drive the same size as at lest half the array for backup purposes.
Thanks. I always back up to an external drive(s). Do you know how I would set-up the RAID? Do I need two identical drives? Are there instructions anywhere?
Yes, you need identical drives. You'll also need an internal floppy diskette drive, and the SATA driver diskette (support.dell.com, enter sevice tag, downloads, SATA).
It all seems pretty clear and I was thinking of following the page 33 instructions for "Migrating to a Raid Level 0 Configuration" and I wasn't sure what I would need the floppy drive for. The Intel Matrix Storage Manager is already on my system.
If you want to create a single large partition, and don't have utility software, you will need to reinstall from scratch. To do that, you'll need a floppy drive. The SATA controller isn't supported by the XP installer.
