Boot up problem STOP: 0x0000007B
For no apparent reason that I could see my registry failed on my Dimension 8400. Using the rcovery disk and following the instructions on the Dell website I deleted and copied files from the repair directory. When I came to EXIT, the system re-booted and the following message appeared on a blue screen:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you have seen this stop screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.
Technical information:
*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7C9B524,0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000)
I cannot not now get into the system even using the recovery disk.
Any advice on how I can get round this without losing all the data on the hard drive.

Once that is done, reconnect the troublesome drive as a secondary and attempt to copy what you can. You should also run the Dell diagnostics on the drive, as there is a high probability it is failing - if so, and you're under warranty, call Dell with the error and they'll replace it.
You will need a second SATA data cable to run two drives together.
If you cannot copy your data, you can try a data recovery service - they're not inexpensive, but it may wind up being the only option.
Once your system is back in order, invest in an external drive and keep backups.
